Someone wished me a happy Memorial Day . Which got me to thinking. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is meant to mourn and honor those who died in the service of our nation. So wishing someone a “happy” Memorial Day seems a bit off to me. But I appreciate the well wishes.

Of course, everyone enjoys a 3-day weekend, and Memorial Day is the unofficial first day of summer. So I understand why most people see it as a celebration and never give thought to the sacrifice that the day is meant to honor.

So, please have a joyous Memorial Day, but please remember the reason….if only for a few minutes.

Absent comrades.

Thank you to my brothers and sisters in arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never came home, and to the family of those heroes.

Thank you to all that have served this country and for everything you (and your families) have sacrificed.

I made it the topic of my radio program this morning. The show is technically about wildlife, outdoor activities, and the Refuge system. Sometimes I stray off into the weeds of history, because I think a knowledge of history is a failing in our country today.

As others have said, I am grateful to those who serve... and those who gave their lives for the freedoms I have.

I realize some of you are well into your afternoon. It is still mid morning here in Alaska.

A bump of Doug's post.

I am using a portion of the freedoms others sacrificed to give me to pack to leave for trip number two to Africa later this week, and I do so mindful of their sacrifices. I am very thankful I live in the United States, and that we have the protections we do.

Best of luck my friend. Travel safely. @Jeff505 and I leave on Thursday for our safari. We stand on the shoulders of giants who came before us!

Thursday to ANC for me - early because AK Airlines sucks (ask me about all the medical visits I've had to reschedule over the past 12 months). Twiddle my thumbs at a hotel and then off on Saturday morning, until I get there.

May your trip be rewarding, prosperous, safe, and without issue. I look forward to hearing and seeing about it when you get back.

Visited the American cemetery in France many years ago. Every blade of grass was cut perfect. Not a spec of dust on the markers. I teared up thinking of the sacrifices all of our young warriors have made in every conflict. Whether drafted or volunteered, they were all tough as nails!
Thanks to all the fallen for your sacrifice so the living can pursue life, liberty and happiness.
