Not that I could afford it, but I'm growing pessimistic about bringing home any ivory. What a burden we take on as Americans; telling Africa how to manage her wildlife. You Africans could at least help by telling us how to manage our wildlife too...

I'm considering either an APNR (sharing an open border with Kruger NP) elephant hunt or a Namibia own-use hunt. I figure I'll get a great experience, a couple of bracelets, and some replica tusks. Please tell me what you know.

I believe the “own use” will not allow you to import any part of the ele. The APNR ele will be importable unless sold otherwise.

For what you mention Namibia...no Elephant on quota in APNR as mentioned by Ernest.....have bracelets made before you leave and wear them when you depart.....or get a hand written invoice for them....only option at the moment between the two ....

Best choice to fo and hunt an ele will be to do zim for a tuskless

Will be invisible tusk replicas.... :ROFLMAO: :A Outta:

If the experience is most important and u cant export any part. Then really do a tuskless

U can make the “replicas” as big as u like

I guess you could but for me that would not be right.....like shooting a soft boss buffalo and getting a replica of the 62" Manyara bull made....
I agree on tuskless which are much more difficult and challenging to hunt....but then it would be pictures only for me anyway....

It was tongue in cheek re the replicas

Hi Badger Matt

As Ernest have mentioned, at the moment there are no quota on APNR elephants.

As we operate mostly in Namibia's Caprivi, I can give you a better understanding of what the so called own use elephant hunts entail.
On these hunts, we normally target a broken tusk bull, or a genetically weak bull, meaning it may be a 25 to 30 years old bull, with just really poor tusks. Remember that even at that age, our bulls tend to be bigger bodied than the Zambezi valley bulls, where I hunted for many years. As the permit is issued on a general permit, and not a trophy permit, nothing can be exported, and the tusks have to be handed in to the game department. With a few measurements and photos, you could have replicas made easily. These should cost you less than US$ 500 per set on bases. Also, as there is normally no sex indicated on the permit, you can shoot a cow as well, being a dry cow or a tuskless one a without dependent calf. We try and stay clear of this, as we try and keep the herds relatively calm.

A typical hunt would be to look for tracks, just like a trophy hunt, and stalk into several elephant, even getting in close to herds, to see whats available. You normally get a lot of elephant interaction before you pull the trigger, as it is basically a trophy hunt in reverse. (This can of course depend on what PH and or outfit you are hunting with.)

These hunts normally sell for anything from around USD 15 000 to 22 000, depending on the area and outfitter. Some guys will let clients shoot trophies or potential trophies on these permits, but that is just bad management, and they should not be allowed to be custodians of areas. Hope this helps.

guys this is a very old thread 2018, only realised it now
