Talley Peep in NECG Grip Trap

Good evening, all.

I am slowly but surely getting my trusty .375 H&H together just the way I like it. Rifle currently wears Talley bases with QD rings. I chose this setup so that I could use Talley's peep in lieu of the scope, if needed/wanted. Front sight is an XS white stripe blade. I really like the setup, with one exception. There is currently no provision to carry the peep onboard while the scope is mounted. In my mind, this somewhat negates the idea of it...

Having said this, I am looking at options. I am considering installing the NECG Traditional Trap Grip Cap R-406. Do any of you fine and knowledgeable folks know if the Talley peep will fit inside? NECG has the depth listed, but not the ID. I have reached out to them, to no avail.

Also open to other suggestions. Should no practical solution exist, I am also considering installing an express-type rear sight.

When I rebarreled my Springfield in 2019, the replacement came with a high Williams front ramp and brass bead. I decided I'd like to add the option of iron sights. I had just installed a one-piece semi p-rail to accommodate a short tube Nikon scope. Seriously entertained thoughts of ordering a quick detach peep/ghost ring from NECG that attaches to rail, but like you I was in a quandary about how to transport it while hunting. Digging the peep out of my backpack kinda negates the whole concept of "quick detach" when the backup is significantly slow to reattach and bring into play. And in Africa I am rarely hunting with a backpack anyway. So I opted to add Winchester Safari Express sights bought off ebay. I drilled and tapped the barrel myself. Liked the setup enough to purchase a second set when I built my 404J last year. Rear sight is adjustable all ways and flips down. It's not a long range rifle so I felt no need for more than one leaf.

86thecat, I had considered something similar, as I actually do leatherwork myself. Considered somehow incorporating a pouch into a sling for it. But what if, for whatever reason I take the sling off? In the end, I want a way in which to store the peep "onboard", in order to mitigate forgetting it or (worse yet) losing it.

And Ontario Hunter....should I deem the grip trap unsuitable, I will certainly look into those Winchester sights! If you don't mind, I may have to pique your brain about building out a rifle. Unfortunately, I am not a machinist, so I am having some clients that have become friends do the actual work for me. I have a vision of what I would like, and am slowly but surely making what I guess you would call a semi-custom rifle.

Order Duane Weibe's handy booklet on turning a standard action Mauser into 375 (or similar). $25 well invested. I had a local machinist open the bolt face to 404J using Duane's instructions. I did everything else but threading, reaming, and head space new barrel. The gunsmith who did that also put the iron sights on this rifle because I happened to have my drill and threading taps in the car. His tap was shot so I made a deal: he put on the sights and I left my taps with him. One piece of advice I would give not in Duane's book is re the order in which the rails and follower are modified. Drop me a PM when you get that far.

So your peep attaches to the base? What bases? Obviously Warne rings. I see a Winchester crossbolt and 3-position striker safety. Is this a Model 70? Color coordination is impressive. Very nice. What holds the peep in the pouch? I don't see a flap or string.

The pouch for the peep is quite deep and I wet moulded it around the peep. It is held very securely and it quite tricky to get out. I have wrapped a small bit of fishing line around the peep which aids getting it out of the pouch.

What's the front sight look like? Must be a low ramp? Is that the natural color or has the stainless been creacoated? Seems rather tan looking. Nice. Do you have a spot marked on the base so peep attaches in the same place? Yes, I see the difference now. Talley are almost identical to Warne QD rings (from that side). Talley rings do have slightly longer bases.

As I recall, doesn't this NECG peep also have an optional ghost ring?

Medium ramp with high blade. Smart. I went with high ramp and shorter fiber optic blade. With a hood to protect it, the bead is not very visible. I think I'll switch to a thicker white bead.

Now while it might look funny or interesting depending on your sense of humor. Put a muzzle loader patch box in the butt stock. You could get a nice steel on and have it color cased.

It's a 375. He'd need to get his shoulder case hardened too.

Another reason I went with this is that unfortunately, the peep is not adjustable for elevation. With the ramp height on my rifle, I could not find a bead of the correct height for my ammo and preferred zero distance. So, I got this and filed it down to the correct height. I had an idea of how much I had to take off by calculating everything. I took things slow, firing a few shots, filing the blade, and repeating. Turns out that my math “mathed”, and the calculated height was in fact the height I wound up at.

I appreciate that tidbit, too! While I am piecing this together bit-by-bit, I have another future endeavor in mind. I have a Ruger in .300 Win that has become somewhat of a closet queen. Finding medium to big bores in left hand is…rather like finding hen teeth. As such, I’m considering re-barreling it to .458.

You know…I had considered something along those lines as well…if done right, it could accommodate other accoutrements as well. But, I fear it would require the removal of too much wood. And, even after drawing some things out, I just couldn’t get anything to look right. Form always follows function, but I just couldn’t find a happy medium.

Thanks. I have adjustable rear leaf sight from Win Safari Express on both 404 Mauser and Springfield 03A3. No need to do any filing. In fact, I am looking for a higher blade for Springfield. The rear sight was mounted a bit too far back (by novice me) and I've nearly buried the leaf. But both front sights are side pushed, not slid in from the front. I'll see what options Brownells offers.

Might consider 425 Express (not to be confused with 425 Rigby Express). Same belted case and rim as 300 Win so no need to alter bolt face. With belted case you wouldn't be looking at tricky head spacing or feeding issues (e.g. 404J's gentle shoulder or 425 Rigby's rebated rim). It is an intriguing cartridge. Presumably, 425 Express would be more pleasant to shoot than 458.

@Ontario Hunter well I have a different perspective, in that it is only a 375, nice low recoiling mid bore. As long as the rifle fits properly I can teach most hunters to shoot a 375 well.
