For those interested in the traditions of ethical hunting, structured training, and conservation-driven deer management, I thought members might appreciate an introduction to the Saint Hubert Club of Great Britain.
Founded in 1953, the Saint Hubert Club of Great Britain is the oldest deer stalking organisation in the UK, named in honour of Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters. The club was established to promote ethical and responsible deer management, and has since been a cornerstone of best practice in the field.
From its earliest days, the club has championed education and training, launching the UK’s first formal deer stalking training scheme in 1957. Its structured mentoring programme remains one of the most comprehensive in the country, guiding members from novice to certified stalker through a LANTRA-accredited pathway.
Forum members from the UK will recognise names such as Richard Prior, A.J. De Nahlik, G. Kenneth Whitehead, and Rex Whitta OBE, all former club members during their lifetime.
The club’s mission centres on the conservation and sustainable management of wild deer species in the UK. It actively supports biodiversity through sustainable solutions that balance deer populations with surrounding land uses and broader landscape requirements. Recognising native deer species’ ecological value, the club advocates a cohesive strategy that upholds ethical venison harvesting while promoting harmony between conservation, public interest, and land stewardship.
With members spread across the UK, the club's headquarters in Norfolk serves as a vibrant hub for training, social events, and access to a wide range of stalking grounds. The calendar includes black-tie events, family gatherings, and, looking ahead, plans to build connections with fellow Saint Hubert organisations worldwide.
The club supports the Save the Rhino International charity with several initiatives traditionally centred around our Annual Club BBQ. If you’re interested in learning more, have a look at the website: https://www.sainthubertclub.org.uk/
