This will be a short note regarding traveling to South Africa. I have been stressing about QR codes and vax certificates for the past month and so here’s what it’s like today entering SA through Tambo airport.
We are a group of five guys hunting with Russell Field Safaris in the Eastern Cape. Four of us left through Boston and one guy from Kennedy in NY. We all flew with Lufthansa and met in Frankfurt. A long layover was arranged to allow us to go downtown for lunch and coffee, it was a nice experience and really breaks the drudgery of flying.
After arriving in Johannesburg, we all lined up for customs/passport control. The Covid monitors worked their way through the crowd collecting the contact trace form that we all prepared on the aircraft and taking our forehead temperature with a FLIR non contact thermometer.
Next we showed our “QR Coded” vax history and that was it. My QR was on my phone, barely able to read because of the size of the writing but the QR was obvious. The Covid monitors made no effort to scan the QR code or to question anything about it. I believe our plane was the only one being processed at the time, the crowd went through the process with out incident and that’s it.
We’re now at the Kelway Hotel in PE for the evening and begin the hunt Monday.
