Sierra 300gr Boattails in 375 Ruger

Went to the range today to blow of the steam of a stressful week, took my 30-06 and my 375 Ruger. The 30-06 still needs some work, but it is getting there, the 375 Ruger did pretty good, fired 50 rounds, most of which were 270-350 grain cast bullets at less than 2000 fps, but I did shoot some 300 grain blemished bullets, and about 10 270gr Hornady round nosed bullets which shot into a little over an inch for 10 shots, but the last 3 shots were the last 3 Sierra 300 grain boattails I had loaded up, they went into .7" at 100 yards, I felt it was a very good way to close out the shooting session.

I get my tightest group shooting 300gr Sierras in my 375HH

I am shooting the Ruger Hawkeye, 23" barrel with the black laminate stock, it was labeled the Alaskan, it was before they went to the Hogue and a 20" barrel. To date, my best group was 3 shots into .5" with the Hornady 300 grain round nose bullets, shame they discontinued them.

High Desert that's a great rifle. My PH in South Africa actually wanted on of those rifles. Is it stainless? I have found that most owners of this rifle agree with you that it's a shame Ruger stopped making them!

It is stainless with the target gray finish, doesn't reflect light, scope matte as well. With the laminate stock it has some weight to it, 8.5lbs with scope if I remember correctly, so recoil is brisk, but not unpleasant, and not so heavy that I can't stand to carry it in the mountains at 9000'.

Sierra used to recommend that bullet.........the 300 SBT ....for buffalo. It is one of the toughest and most accurate bullets I have ever shot in my H&H. Still, the recoil bothered me so badly that I never got a group like that......................well done......................FWB

In a few years, when I retire and move back to the US, I think I'll get back reloading and the 375 Ruger is an ideal cartridge to have a wide variety of loads and bullets.

Who says big caliber rifles can't be accurate, I use Gamekings and get great groups

In a few years, when I retire and move back to the US, I think I'll get back reloading and the 375 Ruger is an ideal cartridge to have a wide variety of loads and bullets.

I use IMR 4198 under either a 270ish grain bullet I cast, or a 350gr bullet I cast. I have used Unique and 2400 as well, all give good results.

I have good luck with Alliant RL17 with Nosler 300gr. Accubonds and Woodleigh 350gr. PP bullets in my 20" barrel 375 Ruger Guide Gun. 300gr. Accubonds at 2590fps with 1/2" 3-shot group at 100yds and 350gr. PP Woodleigh at 2391fps. just under 1" at 100yds.

In the 375 Ruger, I have found RL 17 to be my very best option with 270 and 300 grain bullets, Ramshot Big Game is the only other powder that has come close. I did load up some rounds with the discontinued Hornady 300gr FMJ and H414 someone gave me, we'll see how it shoots.

I would buy it just as a investment in case Hillery gets into office.

My last 5lb jug of it cost $145.00 and I have seen it as high as $179.00

As soon as it becomes available again, I will be buying another 5lb jug. I shoot more RL 17 with jacketed bullets in my 375 Ruger than any other, and IMR4198 with cast, although I dearly love Unique and 2400 as well.

Seems like, in the 375 Ruger, that any powder within the 4350 neighborhood of burn rate, works pretty well. I have gotten good results with IMR4007 and IMR4451 as well as the Ramshot Big Game. RL17 is what gives me the smallest groups, but I wouldn't be afraid to hunt with ammunition loaded with any of the powders I have tried.

The 300 Sierra w/W760 is an accurate combo but the bullet is a bit fragile. The 270 gr TSX is almost as accurate and will "end to end" very well. I also have some old 210 gr X bullets that see 3000 FPS in my 375s. Will kill anything in the lower 48 deader than dead. Same trajectory as a 180 spire point in an 06'.
