I have started shooting for practice and load development with my Buehler-made .404 Jeffery rifle.
I have made a few discoveries...
The rifle weighs (without scope or sling and empty magazine) just 8 lbs., 14 oz. It is a joy to handle, fits well and has just enough barrel weight to be very shootable off hand. Everything works. It's perfect for me.
The scope that I originally selected and provided for mounting on this rifle is a Leupold VX6 HD 1-6X illuminated (30mm) model. With the rings the scope weighs 1 lb., 4.2 oz. Mounted on the rifle the whole system weighs north of 10 lbs. and feels clumsy. PLUS, the aluminum pop-up lens cover provided with the scope are a pain in the a$$ and forehead and, if rotated to adjust the diopter, the tabs on the pop-up covers can block bolt travel. Not good. They are gonna go.
Reto is making me a new set of scope rings to mount one of my VX3 1.5 - 5X scopes (weight 14 oz with rings). Less weight, more eye relief at low power.
I will say that shooting hunting loads off the bench requires the occasional break, but I have zero shoulder aches afterwards. Shooting off the sticks or off hand it is quite a bit more civilized.
