I have searched around for the answer with no luck. I have QD rings on my scopes. Can I detach them and carry them in my carry on to South Africa? Common sense says of course, but I know common sense doesn't govern much nowadays.

Yes. TSA may look at it, but no issues when I had them in my carry on.

Yes you can put optics in your carry-on. I put binos in mine all the time. The only issue you could have is if is a night-vision or a restricted item. Some members carry their scopes in carry-on always.

I always keep extra scope in rings, binoculars, and cameras in carry on. Only problem ever was my baby- wipes. They had an air pocket in them like some variety of explosive ( i didn't ask). So you will be fine unless you want to wipe your ass in the utmost comfort in the bush

Sure you can. I wouldn’t worry about it however. Put your rifle in a soft case inside a good Pelican case and all will be well!

It’s a good idea to include them by serial number on a 4457 form. Proof they were yours entering and exiting your home country and the one(s) you visited.

You guys must be lucky in the US, I have had mine taken off me twice flying to & from Australia, I said same as Binos which I carry all the time, they say Gun Part, so I don't do it any more on any flights, would rather if I could .

Night Vision or worst Thermal scope would be asking for a expensive loss & maybe fine ?
