On May 12, 2017, Safari Club International launched its State Hunter Advocacy Network. The goal of the Network is to increase SCI’s advocacy outreach in state governmental decision-making that will affect the hunting community. SCI is looking to enhance SCI’s and SCI Chapters’ participation in State Game and Fish Commission, Council, and Board meetings and in legislative hearings when these decision-making bodies are addressing rules and statutes that can affect hunting, access and wildlife management.
SCI’s plan in developing the Network is to encourage Chapters to each designate advocacy liaisons who will work with SCI’s Washington, D.C. office to prepare for and represent their chapters in the meetings and hearings of these governmental bodies. SCI’s Department of Hunter Advocacy will work with these liaisons as a group and individually to provide them with information about the meetings and hearings as well as notify them of important issues, upcoming state bills, regulations, and policies affecting participants and others in their state. SCI’s Washington, D.C. staff will also provide Chapter advocacy liaisons with resources to help them work most effectively with state legislators and policy makers.
The State Hunter Advocacy Network launch was well attended by representatives of many of the Chapters who participated in SCI’s 2017 May Board meeting and in SCI’s annual Lobby Day on Thursday, May 11. Jeff Patchen, SCI’s Manager of State Affairs, offered a brief presentation describing the resources that SCI’s Department of Hunter Advocacy will provide to Chapters who participate in the Network. The launch was only the first step in SCI’s development of the Network. Additional training sessions will take place at the SCI August Board meeting and at the SCI Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2018. In addition, starting in June 2017 those who signed up to participate at the May 12th meeting will begin receiving monthly updates about state advocacy-related meetings, hearings and events that will take place in their state and about issues that SCI is watching that could affect hunters and hunting in their states.
Those who participate in the Network can help to increase hunter participation generally in the meetings, hearings and decisions that affect hunting. Individuals who are part of the State Advocacy Network can contact and organize many people to speak out, attend meetings and hearings, write letters, contact their Commission, Council and Board members and legislators and influence decisions that will affect hunters, hunting, and wildlife conservation. Participants of the Network can help their chapter, fellow chapter members, and others to create a profound political impact for sportsmen and women throughout their local community.
