I wanted the community here to know that I am wholly dissatisfied with the services provided to me by this importer.
I did receive a crate about 4'x2'x2' weighing 200 lbs. with my trophies. They were wholly intact.
- It took Scarbrough 47 days to complete an import process that Customs & Border Protection (CBP) agents indicate is currently running a normal period of 7-10 days, 14 at the outside. Scarbrough's explanation for the lengthy process was that since this was my first importation, I wasn't in the CBP computers and they treated me as if I was a drug mule. CBP agents, however, recommended I get a competent importing agent because ALL trophy importations are 100% inspected, regardless of 1st time or 99th time for the hunter. BTW - my hunting partner's trophies were his THIRD shipment and he suffered nearly identical treatment/delays/costs from Scarbrough.
- I was told that part of my delay was due to the CBP demanding hard paper copies of my importation paperwork. This was due to Scarbrough's inability to successfully transmit the paperwork digitally. I suspect that Scarbrough's inability to successfully transmit the paperwork electronically was due to domestic/home internet service connectivity issues. While speak with a Scarbrough agent, the phone call was disconnected. His voicemail message to me 15 minutes later revealed he had lost internet service at his house. Nonetheless, mailing the paperwork from KC to Chicago should have added a week to the 14 day process at most, bringing the total period to 21 days, not 47.
- The CBP agent I spoke with indicated that part of the delay (unspecified how much of it) stemmed from the fact that Scarbrough does not have a storage facility on the airport property in Chicago. CBP indicates they can only conduct their inspections on airport grounds. This led to additional transportation arrangements/difficulties.
- They charged me $3,357.75. Their provided price list of charges totaled approximately $1,200.
- I was completely dissatisfied with the communication/status I received about my shipment and the delays
- I told them from the first call that this was my first safari and asked for their guidance on the most economical way to get my trophies without extravagant storage and delivery fees. Storage fees charged were $900. Delivery was $1,350. I was never informed that I could pick up my trophies at their local terminal for less money.
- My hunting partner specifically instructed Scarbrough to use the most economical method of delivering his trophies. They failed to follow these instructions. When questioned why they disobeyed my buddy's instructions, their agent opined that "it was only about $300 difference between the two methods."
- They failed to get my shipment properly cleared through CBP. I learned this from speaking with a CBP agent who pulled up my files on her computer. She recommended that if I handled my baboon hides, that I wear protective gear as they had not been certified as disease free by a USDA taxidermist.
- The Scarbrough agent I spoke with about the invoice refused to meet with me to discuss these issues, claiming they had no conference area to meet clients since they worked from home. Their terminal facility in Liberty, according to my hunting partner, has quite nice conference/meeting space.
- I went to the address of their offices touted on every e-mail sent by their organization to me. They claim to be operating from this address as of 16SEP22. I visited 19SEP22 and found a drywall crew mudding the walls. The construction supervisor indicated they would not be open for business there until 03NOV22.
Here is the text from an e-mail I received from their accounting department on 17OCT22:
**Scarbrough has moved to our new headquarters as of 9/16/2022! Scarbrough’s updated address is below. Our preferred payment method is ACH, which we would be happy to provide details for, but if you still currently send payment via check please make sure all checks are sent to the below lock box!**
