My first double rifle I bought was an ancient JP Sauer in 11.2x60r.
When I bought it there were 3 small notches in the stock behind the trigger guard. Not sure what game those notches represent.
Last evening the old girl helped take my 5th black bear. It took both barrels to do, but she got it done again. A beautiful dark chocolate color phase bear with some blond hi lites along his back!!

Waidmannsheil @93marlin ! Congrats on a great black bear and nice story of the rifle. Perhaps you can share a close up of the rifle too?

Cheers

Thanks! I can and will put up a photo of the Sauer when I have enough light outside to get a decent photo!

Nice looking bear! I’m not familiar with the round, what’s on t comparable to?

I would assume this is the old .43 Mauser. If so, it was a BP military loading in the Model 1871 Mauser. Would be interested in knowing what loading was used. In either BP or nitro for black it would be fine for black bear out to 150 yards or so. Used a 370gr bullet. Pre-WWI cape guns are fairly common, but doubles are rare.

Well done taking a bear with such a classic rifle!

The 11.2 is better known as the 43 Mauser. I use a loading of Nitro for Black, NFP, under 2 different bullets. The bullet used for this bear was a Hawk 350 soft, I've also used a cast 440 grain for one of the bear this rifle has harvested.

I'm still in northern Manitoba where the hunt occurred. The province's of Canada all have good numbers of black bear. The mid country province's seem to have the best population of them.
The standard way to hunt bear here is a baited stand, either ground blind or tree stand.
At one point Monday evening I was literally surrounded by bear walking all around my tree stand!

Need to also look into the spot and stalk opportunities in British Columbia. I have taken several fine ones by that method over the last decade or so. That wonderful old Sauer would work there as well, though the ranges could stretch it a little.

Well done. Nice rifle. Open sights. Love your style. I want to take a bear with a 30-30 m-94 or a 348. Maybe a 38-55.
We’re the bears out during good light?

I have always like those old hammer doubles and Sauer made some fine ones. Have looked at a couple in 43 Mauser but was always when I have the $$$ committed for other things.

Nice bear and is even more special taken with a fine old double.

Fantastic hunt with an absolute classic of old school German workmanship. Black Bear tenderloin makes for some very delicious hams, after being brined cured and apricot glazed and smoked with hickory wood.

I had multiple bear coming in within 5 minutes of sitting down in my tree stand!! Shot this one right at 8pm.

Your 348 would be perfect. The bear up where I'm, can get 7-8ft. You want enough gun to put them down quick.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
