SAKO AV .375 a good rifle?

One of there popped up at a gun store in my local AO. Priced just under 1500 and comes with leupold rings.

I took a look at it yeasterday and it is very nice, no irons though.

Does this sound like a decent deal with clean wood and good looking barrel and crown?

Yes, it sounds like a fair deal to me. They are very nice quality rifles. I have a Finnbear 375 and like it a lot. In today's world anything new that approaches that quality would cost significantly more.

Did Sako ever make a bad rifle? I picked up great like new used iron sights on ebay for both my guns. Both sets were off Winchester Safari Express. The most expensive set cost $150, the other right at $100 shipped. A gunsmith can mount them in a few minutes. These are screw mounted. If you wanted to go fancy barrel banded, etc. that would be substantially more expensive because the gun would have to be reblued (sights are sweated on).

Can't go wrong with an AV, I have a couple and they are both shooters. I'd recommend buying this one and go hunt. $1400-1800 seems to be the going rate.

I had an AV in .375 H&H. There are a couple of things to be aware of.
First the stocks tend to split if they are not glass-bedded. The bottom corner of the recoil lug bears against the the center of a round crossbolt which makes for a very tenuous connection. When I lived in Alaska it was common knowledge that a split stock was likely on anything over .30 caliber. I witnessed a .338 stock split after 6 rounds of 225 gn factory ammunition.
Second the rotating guide on the bolt is held on by the tip if a leaf spring under the guide (press a punch into the hole in the guide to depress the spring, allowing the guide to slide off). When the spring broke the bolt guide slammed forward, into the locking-lug recess and the barrel had to be removed to get it out. The solution was to put a pin, vertically, through the guide just behind the rotating ring around the bolt. Since the guide has a rounded profile it was necessary to mill a flat top and bottom to facilitate drilling.
Otherwise it was a very satisfactory rifle. This is just my experience, take it for what it's worth.

Nothing wrong with a 375 H&H in the right rifle with the right bullet....even for elephant.....

Yes, I mean no. No you shouldn’t buy this rifle. Instead you should tell me where it is you saw it and I’ll “look” at it for you.

All kidding aside, it’s a good deal for a first step into a mid-bore and has the potential to be a wonderful rifle that you can use for years.

My .375 is an AV. Owned it since the early ‘80’s. I’ve taken elk and PG with it. It is a bit temperamental about what loads it likes, but the ones it does, shoot very well.

I bought mine used from a guy in Alaska-i really love this rifle. I handload and have found it is easy to get good accuracy with multiple weights and styles of bullet. I would buy another without hesitation. Mine did well in South Africa and will go back next year for Buffalo. I have not had any issues or breakages and the action is smooth.

One word answers and arguments are pointless and belong on another forum-one in china perhaps. A little information and some respect are always welcome.

It came on the rifle but was plain boring black, I had it custom painted by LongRifles Inc.
I would prefer wood but it’s hard to spend for a new stock when you are saving money for the next safari. A “maybe someday” goal.
