Sable and Roan

Welcome to AH. You came in with a bang. Looking for these two animals with the size you are looking for is a TOUGH to fill. There are some place in South Africa you might be able to get them both . but might also consider hunting one with a company and the other with a different outfit. I took a nice sable in 2015 and my roan in 2018. With different outfitters. Both properties were high fenced but were both over 40,000 acres. Saw the fence when we arrived and left. Best of luck on your adventure.

Hi. I am new to forum and am appreciative of all input. I am looking for offers for a sable/roan combo hunt. I would like 48 inch plus sable and 30 inch roan. I am trying to keep shipping and taxidermy cost down for my first trip.

Not interested in small fenced areas.

Thank you.
Hello sir,

I can defiantly help you out with this, and I can make a good combo deal for you if you're interested.

All our hunting grounds in the Eastern Cape of South Africa are on large plots of land 4,000+ acres.

Message me if interested or give me a call on cell or WhatsApp.

His destination is South Africa with lowered expectations (or a huge budget to shoot breeders)
You are correct.
If I need to shoot roan and sable in a fence, and choose between South Africa and Namibia, I would choose South Africa because it is cheaper.
In wilderness is hard to meet both of them in same area, also true. And in wild area probably would be unlikely to find them both in record size of the horn.

I want to add a few thoughts about hunting these animals in wide open, wild areas. First, the hunt matters way more than the size on a truly wild, open area with no fences at all.

Sable - there are very few places where one can have a reasonable expectation to see, let alone kill, a sable of 45” or greater. The Kafue region of Zambia May be the single best place, but Matetsi in Zimbabwe and western Tanzania are the two other regions that come to mind. I’ve got 41” (Matetsi 3) 42” (Mlele South, western Tanzania) and 45” sable (Deka, Zimbabwe) and as far as I’m concerned they’re all excellent specimens. I’ve seen exactly 2 sable we thought would go 48” or better, one was on the Selinda block in Botswana in 1989 and the other was on Deka in 1983. We thought the Deka bull might go 49” and we almost got him killed but in the end shot the 45” bull. If I was going to personally attempt a bull above 45” I’d do it in the Kafue region, probably with Johnny DuPlooy or Fico Vidale.

Roan - There are even fewer places where one can hunt free ranging Roan and not many of those can produce an upper 20’s bull. You might find such a bull on some of Zambia’s Luangwa Valley blocks, but I doubt it. If I’m not mistaken most Zambian Roan shot top out in the mid-20’s. The only other countries I’m aware of where you can hunt wild, non-fenced roan are Tanzania and Cameroon. I’m not even considering what Zim might produce since there are only a few permits in the entire country. I know western Tanzania can produce big roan as a friend shot a 29” bull on Mlele South in 2021, I held the skull and it was a huge roan. There are a handful of western Tanzanian blocks where good Roan exist and some of those blocks, like Mlele, hold both species. I killed a 42” sable on Mlele and my friend killed a bigger sable and that monster roan. I saw both species on my hunt. But, if I’m going on a hunt specifically for a big Roan, I’m going to Cameroon. Cameroon, on the right blocks, has lots of roan. A year ago, we hunted hard for a big roan there and found what we thought might be a 27” bull, but couldn’t get him killed. I’m probably going to go back in 2027 for Roan & Buffalo, but will hunt a different block with a different company than where I hunted in 2024. And if I can find a 26-27” Roan I won’t be holding out for bigger.

That’s my unsolicited .02 worth on those two species.

Listen to what this man says, he has a lot of knowledge. There are two blocks in Namibia with big Roan as well, but it’s not a hunt for the budget conscious. You will have to hunt a really expensive elephant to get that roan tag.

Cameroon is probably the best place to have a realistic shot at a big roan.

I guess I dont understand.
I've read about small fenced areas where game is bought to be hunted.
As it is my first hunt I would rather spend more money on trophy fees that are the animals that are and will be most wanted.
I guess I could do a first timer package but will end up doing this anyway. May be I won't spend as much money on Taxidermy later on first timer hunts.
Good afternoon,

After giving it some thought here’s what I came up with for you, if you’re interested.

Animals Only:
Sable (44-48inch) and Roan (27-30inch) for $7,000.00 total
Sable (48-52inch) and Roan (29-32inch) for $8,700.00 total

Taxidermy:
Sable (Shoulder mount) and Roan (Shoulder mount) for $1,940.00 total
Sable (Full body mount) and Roan (Full body mount) for $9,564.00 total
Sable (Euro mount) and Roan (Euro mount) for $606.00 total

Shipping:
Depending on mount options $1,600.00 - $2,200.00

Days Fee:
$400.00 Per hunting day.

I don’t charge trophy fees for any trophy animal, all trophies are a flat rate cost. All hunts will take place on large tracks of land, nothing under 4000 acres. There will be fences that lie on the perimeter of the properties.

I do have larger trophies available but they would have to be a special request.

You start with: I have $30K to spend on a 48" plus Sable! Any takers?

Then add, once we get that done I got $20k for the 30" Roan, plus I'll throw in an extra $10k tip on top of the trophy fees and standard tips if we get it done in the same trip.

Oh, And throw out the hides, and ship the horns in the smallest crate possible...

Thanks, Don Rickles!

So you’re saying you’ll provide a hunt, all in, for a gigantic Sable AND gigantic Roan, for an all-in total cost of $8,700? Not counting taxidermy or shipping, of course. I’m highly skeptical about this, given how far below market the price is. Do you untie them before the guy shoots it? I apologize for pissing on your offer, but I can only imagine he’s shooting (not hunting) a past breeding animal on a small property. There must be more to the story as it doesn’t quite make sense.

4,000 acres in SA that is high fenced….thats about like hunting a 50 acre farm here in the states

Good afternoon,

Yessir that’s exactly what I said!

Your skepticism is noted, but frankly, it’s misplaced. My offers for both animals (Sable and Roan) is exactly as advertised—a legitimate, flat-rate hunt for the trophies.

Yes, it’s on 4,000+ acre properties, not some tiny pen with “untied” animals. I don’t cut corners or compromise on ethics. My clients are more than happy with my pricing and the quality of their hunts, and they’d laugh at the idea of this being too good to be true (trust me we have lots of laughs). If you can’t see the value, then truthfully, that’s your own loss—plenty of others do.

Feel free to Reach out if you change your mind or want to discuss like adults.

Best, Joe Cooper

Hmmmm lets just think about this...

You're comparing 4,000 acres to a 50-acre farm.

To clarify: 4,000 acres equals 6.25 square miles, while 50 acres is only 0.0781 square miles.
That means 50 acres is about 1/80th the size of 4000 acres.

My high-fenced South African property spans this 6.25 square miles, with a mountain range enhancing the challenging terrain. I'm not saying that my property is the largest out there by any means but I think your math is WAY off.

I’d be happy to provide more examples of why 4,000 acres is vastly larger than 50 acres if you’re interested.

Best Joe Cooper

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...
