Bought my son a new Ruger for Christmas! He got to take it to the range yesterday. He got it sighted in and he is ready to go back to Africa! This rifle is the M77 Compact with matte stainless and a laminated stock. It's a 7 mm 08 with a 16.5 inch barrel. 95% of the punch of a 308 round at about 75% of the recoil. Mounted a Leupold VX3 ! Bryson told me the length of pull was great and shot the thing easily. Another fine addition from the folks at Ruger!

Congrats to Bryson, looks like a great mountain rifle too!

Thanks Jim P. I already sent that in!

7mm-08 is a great round and easily re-loadable

Ruger Alaskan Hawkeye 416

Also might be a decent foul weather Alaskan Dall sheep, mountain goat, caribou and black bear getter.

I have 416 Rigby,416 Remington and this identical 416 Ruger .

I can inform you with out one bit of hesitation that these Ruger Alaskan's are fantastic, they are hard to find .

grab it while you can !

Gun Broker also has a few Ruger African 416s (both Ruger & Rigby) for those interested in the longer barrels. Note the last listing, it's a big place in Alabama called Wholesale Hunter. They have 6 in stock.

CAustin:

You and your son might enjoy reading this article on the Ruger Compact. The gun in the article is a 308, but comments and photos will be about the same for your rifle.

375 RugerFan I actually have the compact in the 308. That's why my son knew that he liked it. I gave some consideration to just going ahead and giving him my 308, which is bright stainless with a little less dark laminated gray stock. The young man will get it anyway when I'm gone someday. But then I thought I might need it for a hunt myself so I got him his own but just in a different caliber! They are nice to have inside a deer stand because of the short overall length.
Like you I'm a Ruger Fan.

Great gift Charlie,
The 7mm 08 is a great cartridge, I took my Dall with one. I can highly recommend two loads, both are 139 grn Hornady superformance loads, the SST for deer, sheep and antelope, use the GMX for everything else.

Charlie,

That's a great little rifle and a fun cartridge. I use to have a Remington XP 100 handgun in 7mm08. Santa brought me a new Tikka in 300 win mag and a Leupold VX3 3.5 x 10 CDS. Once I get it in a new stock, I'll be posting some pictures. Again, great rifle, my Ruger M77 in 375 Ruger had a fantastic outing in Africa. Love the Rugers!

Mike

Hunterman15 I'm with you! My Rugers always seem to have a great outing in Africa. I really had to make myself put a Model 1 in 450/400 back in the rack at the Kansas City Cabelas the other day! I love Rugers!

Charlie,

A Ruger #1 is my next purchase, being left handed there ideal.

Have a healthy, happy, and safe new year.

Have you ever considered something like Cerakote on the stainless to get rid of the bright, shining look. Or camo duct tape:)

I've got a 7/08 with an 18" barrel (remington rather than ruger) and I use 45gr H335 with a 110gr TTSX. I get 3018fps with it. Makes the most of that nice short barrel.
