I am getting ready to load ammo for my Westley Richard 1871 Express rifle in 500 No.2 Express. The bore is Whitworth rifled. If I can make this gun shoot I hope to use it on my bear hunt to Manitoba this September.

I am concerned about the shooting round bullets in the polygonal Whitworth bore. I am asking for your opinions on this.

The bullets I have available are as follows.

1. CBE .510 440 mould. This seems the safest option shooting malleable round bullets in a polygonal bore.

2. Woodleigh .510 440 grain RN SN. These bullets have a thinner jacket designed for Black powder express rifles. I would think they should be fine in a Whitworth bore. I have 55 of these bullets.

3. Barnes Original .510 450 grain. An unknown to me.

Would like to hear your opinions on these bullets suitability in a polygonal bore.

FWIW, i will be cross posting this question else where to get additional opinions.

Here is my bore. 8 groove.

I would use cast as that’s what it was designed for, and I like cast. You may get blowby with jacketed or damage the throat, it’s a 150 year old gun, treat it gently

I would use hard cast or paper patched bullets in that classic old rifle.

I have a box or 440 gr cast that I use in 50/70 and 50/90 rifles I could send you to try.

@TheDoubleD where 'bouts in Manitoba are you heading?
I've been up there a few times for bear

It’s definitely designed for long cast bullets. Look at the twist on that barrel, that’s no round ball gun!!!

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
