OK let me hear it- why shouldn't I look at picking one up. Seems interesting as a basic big bore rifle.

Cant see why you shouldnt. If i'm not wrong, the 798 are basically a Zastava mauser, imported by Remington. It should be a solid rifle.

Really....who needs an excuse to buy a new gun!! :) on a serious note I guess it depends on how much one would pay for the gun? If its cheap enough, Buy it!

??? Why wouldn't you???? Remington thought enough of them to put their name on the side, that says something to me. They are very solid rifles, only thing I have heard (as a valid complaint) was barrel length for going into the "shit", whatever, buy it, it's a good gun on a proven platform.

If I am not mistaken Remington has dropped the 798 from their line. It is no longer on Remington's website.

Surely new one are still available for now, but in the future......

However their is a Zavasta importer in the US.

K-Var Corp. ™

I know a group of guys that got together on a shooting forum and ordered around 68 LEFT Hand models. K-Var is importing them and the cost is only around $50.00 more per gun than the right hand. They also ordered a couple of extra left handed rifles.

Probably one of the better deals for a CRF rifle, especially if you are left handed.

The "Remington" is just a name. The important information is that it is built by Zastava, who have been building Mauser rifles since 1880 (Mauser-Milovanović M1878/80, cal. 10,15mm) and the classic Mauser action since 1924. What they don't know about Mauser actions you could write on a pinhead with room to spare. IMO, there is no more solid bolt action than the Mauser, so I would think your .458 (Win or Lott?) should be reliable, sturdy and smooth. If the price is right, I would buy it. As for wanting one for hunting, see below...:wink2:

Yup, been about 2years now I reckon

I bought a remington 798 in 458 WM. It took a considerable amount of work by a competent gun smith to get it to feed properly. Now it does and all I need is to replace the poor folding sight with a better one. The rifle is a good canvas to work on, but it will take some work to get the "picture" that you want.
