A gentleman looking for magazines for his new 760 got me to pull mine out of the safe for a look.
While no one will mistake these for an "Africa" rifle, I'm sure anyone who cut their teeth deer hunting in the US in a state that borders a Great Lake or Canada has seen a few. Mine is still my go to northwoods deer rifle because it was handed down to me and it's just got good mojo! Plus for a mass produced factory gun it sure has a nice piece of wood! Who else has got one hiding in the safe?

"HAD" A NICE LEFT HAND, BASKETWEAVE CHECKERED 30-06. MUST NOT HAVE FIT ME RIGHT, ONLY GUN I'VE HAD THAT I WAS SCARED TO SHOOT. KILLED ON BOTH ENDS!

I do not have the 760. Though I do have a Model Six in 30-06.
Count me as a fan of the Remington pump rifles. Neat pieces of machinery.

I have it’s predossesor the model 14 in 30 Remington which is a great still hunting rifle wearing a redington peep sight.

schmijar, you are correct. For deer hunting in the woods of Michigan (at least in my case) the Model 742(s) and 760(s) are hard to beat. My most accurate load was given to me by my long time now deceased hunting buddy. With it I have put 10 shots into less than a one-inch group, not just once but on numerous occasions. The projectile I prefer is definitely old school. That being a 180 Gr. Round Nose Hornady. Without a doubt the long bearing surface has something if not everything to do with it. I'm sure that Western shooters would chide me for not using a modern spire pointed projectile, but my shots are almost always at less than 100 yds.

@Shootist43 that is interesting, in my 760 I've shot 180 gr pointed Core lokts for years but last year tried some ttsx loads which worked great also. However, my 76 year old dad is a 742 man, and has long said his rifle vastly prefers the round nose bullet as well. Again, we don't shoot terribly far, and I can't argue with his 60 years of experience, the shots he makes at moving animals in cover still astound me!

schmijar, where are you located and where do you and your dad hunt?

I have no problem using a 760 in 30-06 or 35 whelen as my Bushveld Plains Game rifle. Fast handleing, and accurate is the same all over the world, if its fast and accurate in the US, its fast and accurate in Africa.

As a kid growing up in Pennsylvania my parents bought me a new 760 in 30-06 for my birthday. Bought in 1970 it has been used by all of my 5 kids as they grew into hunting. Not sure how many deer and hunts it’s been on but it is well used and has a pile of memories in it. Supper accurate and fast following up shots. I need to drag it out and use it again on some Florida hogs.

My dad used one in Idaho for years. It wouldn't pattern on paper worth a darn, but he always said it got his animal. He killed a monster elk with it around 58-60 yrs ago that was , I think, #48 in Boone and Crocket when originally measured.
He died 3 yrs ago and it wasn't with his other guns. Wish I had it.....

I hope you are honoring him by still using it.
I haven’t yet, but I plan to use it once I get a new scope for it. It has a hideous BSA scope that is completely oversized.

The week after I was born my mom's father gave Dad a brand new 760 in 30-06. That was 1952, the first year those went on the market. I still have it and once in a while I hunt with it. Fast follow up shots are greatly overrated but the gun does fit snuggly at my side when hunting in thick stuff. Dad cut the stock off for Mom but I don't think she ever shot anything with it. The scope is Weaver K4 with Bausch & Lomb quick detach mount.

Ontario Hunter, I too have a thing for old scopes on old guns. I have put refurbished Weaver K-4(s) on a number of Swedish Mausers and my Remington 760. There is a facility / company called Iron Sight that rebuilds old Weaver and Redfield scopes. Lead times are about a year. They will install your choice of Reticles, mine now wear a Duplex.

The Bausch & Lomb detachable rings/base is something of a collectible item now. An interesting concept that allowed the scope to snap off with rearward pressue. It does hold zero but drawback is shooter has to peek under a crossbar to see the iron sights. Also, it's spring loaded and internal spring tends to get rusty and then either stuck or broken. I have a feeling B&L tried unsuccessfully to sell the idea to US military.

Ontario Hunter, I've used Weaver Tip-Off Mounts on my 742 since 1982. So far, they've always returned to "zero."

Thanks so much! Now I want to put QD mounts on mine...just when I thought I had it sorted.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
