Fellow hunters, just an idea to gauge your thoughts - what do you think of a recognition for hunting achievements or milestones reached? Our little sporting club here in Africa is called Carruthers & Co and we have a tie for each of the following - a stag taken in the Scottish highlands, an English pheasant on the moors, a buffalo and a trophy tiger fish taken at the annual tiger tournament. The last one is very tough, so getting all four in our case is a big deal and nobody has got there yet, although some nearly, then they get the tie with all four embroidered in gold.
So I got to thinking here in lockdown, as one is wont to do, how about a similar system for AH members? A tie for each of the Big 5 and the gold would be for the very few individuals who have achieved the dizzy height of all 5. And of course a silk scarf for each of the lady hunters who get the targets.
Let me know your thoughts, if it gets the thumbs up Ill look at how to organise the trophies.

I usually HAVE to wear a tie daily, not interested.

Awards seem pretty much a SCI kind of thing. Third Order of Dinah with sapphires and diamonds, etc.

But seriously - Ties? That must be Commonwealt kind of thing. ;) Haven’t worn one for six years a don’t anticipate it until the next funeral. It’s a Texas thing. Unless, of course, one is @wesheltonj and a judge. (y)

Detest ties. How about pins?

Nothing against it but I'm trying to think of the last time I went to a wedding since that would be about the last time I wore a tie. Five, maybe six years ago.
So I'm gonna have to go with the pin idea.

I pretty much don’t do sports coats either these days. Haven’t much of a lapel to play with on a cotton khaki outdoor shirt. Not sure where I would stick a bleeding pin. In some drawer or another I have NRA, SCI, DSC, and for all I know Boy Scouts of America’s pins. The kids will find them someday.

Pins go nicely on a hat.

I'll second the pin. Dressing up for me is a shirt with a collar.

Let me modify my tie answer, if you can talk Hermès into making them, then of course, I would be interested in a tie. And that’s not gone to happen any time soon or most not likely in my remaining lifetime.

G'day Kevin,

Great idea, but sadly I rarely wear a tie these days. My father gave me some ties that he got in Kenya Years Ago, one in Navy Blue, and second is dark green, and they have the heads of 5 x game animals. I do not know if it was from a club, nor if my father was given them. It's just a shame that the images on the ties weren't larger, as you have to get close to see them.

Also, I found a couple of Tembo Club badges in my Grandparents house, once again, I don't know if they were in a Kenyan Club in Kenya, or in a club created for Kenyan ex-pats now living in Australia. On the back of the badge, it says made in Australia, but they could have been exported to Kenya, who knows???

Regards

Rob

On the subject of Badges, the Kenya Regiment Badges can be found on ebay every now and then. I have attached a photo of the original coloured badges, as the later ones were silver. The large badge in the middle of the photo is the Badge for their slouch hat, and beret. The little badges on either side without any writing are for shoulder tabs, or possibly lapels?. Either way, the little ones will look great on your ties or hats, a real charging buffalo insignia. My mate purchased some purely for that reason.

Hi Rob, thanks for sending these photos. I fully expect those ties were in recognition of something, it is unusual to see all five of the Big Five embroidered. Maybe just an elephant or a buffalo if it were just decoration. I suspect a Big Five club or an honour. The Tembo badge is beautiful, what a memento to have. Please dig some more, those from that era wont be here much longer.
You have made my mind up, i am going to do badge pins for our Carruthers Club achievements, easier to wear than the tie. Heck, might do both!

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
