Rear pillar length and mag well separation?

I recently picked up an 03A3 Springfield that had been converted to a budget benchrest rifle, and I am in the process of fashioning a rear pillar for the action. What is the right amount of separation to have between the mag well and the base of the action, or does it really matter if they make contact?
