Question on EAW Swing Mount

Hello all, I recently purchased a Simson drilling that came with a set of EAW swing mounts. In order to get the scope back far enough (for proper viewing), I basically had to place the turret directly above the mount. From what I can tell, the scope turret is just barely touching the mount. Is this a big concern? Will I get erratic flyers because of the contact with the mount? I can move it forward, but I begin to exceed the eye box for full view, especially at max power. Personally I would move it forward, even if just 1/16”. I would not want it touching the turret. Often there is a slight bevel to the turret/tube joint. If you are clamped on such a spot you may introduce unwanted stresses in the scope.

Thanks for the feedback, I’ll likely move it forward and deal with the reduced view.

If it were me, I would look at the possibility of rubbing the flat top edge of the mount with a stone, and then just put on a touch of blue. You are talking about such a small amount that it needs to be relieved.
The other option is choose a different scope. I like the old Zeiss Conquest MC 3-9x40 (assembled in USA), very forgiving with eye relief and position.
Best scope placement is the most important thing. I have three drillings one is a 67 Merkel (same as yours probably), and getting the scope in the correct spot was difficult. In the end I had an old German gunsmith in Brisbane sort it out. He did a fantastic job. This one is a Zeiss MC 1.8-5.5x38.
Go for the best scope position or it will always annoy you.

How would you know if it was "barely" touching? It might be applying more pressure than you can tell...

I had several drillings and Bockbüchsflinten which had the ring in close proximity to the scope turret without issues. It seems to be quite common on this kind of weapons in Europe.

Thanks for the feedback, and nice drilling…I love that traditional color case hardening, looks really nice. My Simson was made in ‘77, so I agree that our drillings were probably made in the same factory.

In truth, I absolutely don’t know how much pressure is being applied. When rotated towards a light, I can see just a sliver of light on one side of the gap, and none on the other, so I’m just assuming it’s touching at least a small amount!

Interesting, thanks for your opinion. I’ll try to post some pics this weekend of the scope mounted to the gun so everyone can get a better overall view of my supposed issue!

You won’t be able to notice the eye relief change if you move the scope 1mm and you will have peace of mind knowing the mount and tube are not stressed.
