I have always bought Maui Jim prescription sunglasses which I used for both fishing and upland shooting. They are expensive. But I still felt I needed protection with impact proof, prescription shooting glasses - I couldn't get away with my non-prescription Decot shooting glasses any longer. After quite a bit of research I found J.H. Steward (Bisley) Web address: jhs-eyewear.com

I ordered two pairs of prescription glasses - clear and grey tinted and both polarized. The price was LESS than one pair of the Maui Jims that I have used previously. These fill all my needs for fishing, driving, shotgunning and rifle shooting. I recommend them.

I really liked the Gatorz specter sunglasses, for shooting glasses I bought a new pair and sent it to Hunter HD Gold with just enough magnification on my dominant eye to see the front sight (still have 20/20 vision for distance). I actually took my handgun to my Optometrist office to get it just right.

Always great to try something new - and it works.

Any reason you did not want Decott for the prescription version?
I'm near sighted with bifocals, and have used their Rx (with distance only correction) for decades. Lite-Medium Rose is my all around shooting color, but it's kind of ugly looking in pictures.

I used to have Decot some years ago. Really hate their frames. I went to Hunters HD Gold because their frames were better and then Gatorz for full ballistic wrap around protection. Also, the current lenses will adjust with the light where as with Decot I had to change lenses.

I went for a full eye test a few weeks ago and had a long chat with my optometrist about requirements for hunting. Our conclusion was to get a specific pair for reading and a separate pair specially for hunting with consideration of the sight distance too. Once we had sorted out the prescription it moved to the colour and coatings and by wearing the test specs and fitting various coloured clip-on's outside in the sun we got it about perfect with a brownish orange tint. The definition and contrast varied hugely from colour to colour, I was surprised. All of this took over an hour but the result was amazing and worth the effort.
So the lenses were made by Zeiss in Germany and arrived on Wednesday, they come as big discs with an alignment grid on them. I tried them once more by hand, left and right eye and it was perfect. The finished framed glasses will be ready on Monday and I'll take them to the gun shop to see how they work with their Heym double. Quite a procedure, but I think nothing less is acceptable.

Similar to the procedure I went through. Important thing was to have enough magnification to see the front sight, but still be able to see the background in the distance. With regular reading glasses the background is a blur. I also have the magnification on my dominant eye only and the other eye is clear. Shooting with both eyes open the brain adjusts.

I've had the Decot lenses pop out of the frames once or twice while field shooting. PITA. And certainly not something that should happen when I am shooting at a buffalo - or any game animal. The glasses I got from JHS had much better 'head down' vision when shooting with a scope.

Interesting. I'm been in the semi wrap-around "Revel's" for my last few Rx changes. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

I had the right lens "knocked" out of the old "Hy-Wyd" version once. Station eight skeet. Looked up just in time to catch half a skeet target with my face. Eye protection worked very well.

Been wearing Decot's Hy-Wyd for years their extra large 69 for Clays, Bird Hunting in heavy cover and shooting Rifles... Do wish they made a full frame but if you look after them they will last.. have I ever lost a lense, yes....
I am cross dominate so I have a bit of tape on the lens of my non dominate eye this enables me to shoot Irons and scopes with both eyes open

For incredible target enhancement & eye protection at low cost...while shopping for name brand glasses....try "Radians Clay Pro" Vermillion Shooting glasses on sale from Amazon $15.55.

I've got several pairs of Decot but use the Radians about 98% of the time. Worth a try...

I have a pair of Decot Hy-Wyd glasses set up for pistol shooting with just enough correction in my right eye to see the sights and zero in the left. Rather than buying a new set of shooting glasses for rifle hunting, I was thinking of just getting a set of non-corrected lens to use with a scope.

For hunting areas like the Eastern Cape and/or Namibia, what color lens would you suggest for the best contrast while providing some protection from the sun? I normally wear an amber (not yellowish) or brown lens while driving and grey at the beach.

For general use, I like a amber/tan/brown lens. For clays I like vermillion or yellow, depending on background. I also like lenses that are clear and will darken as the sun light intensifies.

On the color, check with the guy that takes your order. They will - or should, know what is popular with various shooting sports and climates.

My guy said to just stay with what I've used for years in the bright New Mexico sun (rifle, pistol and most shotgun games). Lite Medium Rose. They worked well for me in Limpopo, including after dark for awhile, a time or two.

Btw, I'm not a dark sunglasses fan. Don't even have a pair.

Just to see if some of the other colors help me, I just bought some cheap shooting glasses off of Amazon in vermillion, purple, and orange. By cheap, I mean $6-16 a pair. Better to spend a little to find the color I like than to spend a lot of new Decot lens and find I hate the color.

Because glare from the sun gives me wicked headaches, I don't skimp on my sunglasses. I have or have had Costas, Smiths, Maui Jim, and Oakley's. My daily drivers tend to be in amber. They also can double as fishing glasses here on the small trout streams.

You do have some of the bluest skies I've ever seen out in New Mexico.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
