In what seems a very short time I will be making knife # 1000 and as sugested by @rookhawk it will be auctioned for a yet to be determined hunting or conservation organisation connected to some aspect of the Africa Hunting scene.

I marked "Other" because I think it ultimately needs to be the artist's inspiration. Whatever it ends up being for a blade shape, I think a large handle is key so it permits @Von Gruff to express the detail and quality he is capable of in a beautiful manner. Nickel silver / mammoth accents, and a native New Zealand wood that harkens to his homeland? I'm not sure, but I'm sure whatever he decides is going to be stunning.

I like a light weight EDC , so a big heavy weight knife wouldn’t be my first choice in a knife for walking around on safari

The knife will be made and then auctioned so design needs settled before it is auctioned.

I wasn't suggesting its up to the buyer, i was suggesting it should be up to the maker! Your show, @Von Gruff . I'm sure it will be the Mona Lisa of knives!

Are you going to spend several thousand dollars on a knife for every day carry on safari?

I agree that it should be up to the maker, be it one of your designs or a brand new one.

I personally like a useful knife, but I also like unique ones that may never be used on a hunt.

EDC Hunter gets my vote...

Love @rookhawk 's idea of using a hardwood from NZ for the handle material.. maybe combined with some sort of African material for bolsters since the intent is to auction the knife on behalf of a conservation organization related to hunting in Africa..

Heavy Hunter.

I really like that design, even if it puts me in the minority in the poll.

EDC Hunter with the scandi grind.

Or if you want to go exotic on us, you could go something like this (Just kidding)

I really like the 2 options listed, but for a charity auction item it should be unique. A functional showpiece that demonstrates Garry’s talents is what is called for on this occasion.

I love the mashup of Africa and NZ concept. Maybe a historical figure or favorite African animal for inspiration? (like Erik Nording’s hunting pipes which are inspired by game animals)

I cast a vote for the PH EDC, I would also be happy with something like a Classic Mini Skinner scaled up to a 3.5" - 4" blade. Two things I think important whatever knife form is chosen:
  • Buffalo horn curved bolsters (this is at the heart of Africa hunting)
  • The chosen knife should be 100% practical and not some fantasy knife or pseudo sword design.
Gary has great craftsmanship and can create almost anything, but the true spirit of a knife must be in its usability.

I like the proffesional hunter edc, but I think your tahr hunter is beginning to work it’s magic on my wallet

I nominate a Pocket Ranger. Three pin polished brass or buffalo horn bolster under Kerelian Birch or other very high end hardwood. This blade and sheath. I lost this one to my lovely wife so I need a new one;)

I only have these 2 bars of stainless damascus on hand and the ladder bar (lower one) is not big enough for a Pocket Ranger. The upper one is Fireball Damascus and is large enough foe that blade. The Ladder bar will do the smaller knives and up to a Bushcraft Hunter as it is not a deep knife.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
