Permetherin stink

I noticed that the permetherin spray designated for clothing is substantially more expensive than the same dilution sold for animals. I bought a large jug of the animal spray to use. The big difference seems to be the odour. The animal version has a strong citronella and flowery "perfume" .

Has anyone tried to use the animal version? I am wondering if the smell will dissipate or is it a problem for hunters.

I always use the stuff made for clothes by sawyer $15 and it lasts about 4-6 weeks or 3-4 wash cycles. I had a buddy that used the horse spray on his skin. I never noticed the smell on him though i highly doubt the application style he was using is even remotely safe.

I have used the animal stuff on my clothes for at least the last 5 years. It works as well as the expensive stuff. One treatment a year at the beginning of tick season is all I've ever needed. Dilute to 0.8% (I actually dilute to 1% so that I can do the math in my head) and soak for a few hours. The scent goes away after a few washings. I wouldn't worry about the scent busting you on the hunt. People stink bad enough to animals- if you aren't minding the wind you are in trouble scented clothes or not.

Using on skin is pointless as it is not persistent. Considering that there are permethrin lice treatments, I wouldn't worry too much about the safety (although there may be other concerning ingredients in the particular product he is using) of it on the skin. I use a pyrethrin-containing dog shampoo every couple of weeks in bug season- I figure if it sticks to dog hair, it probably sticks to human hair and it may help. Put it on dry hair, work it in, let is sit for 10 or more minutes and then rinse.

I bought mine from a horsey place on amazon Canada. Cut it 20:1 with water and spray never noticed it smelled any worse than the stuff I bought at Walmart in the US. I have enough to last the rest of my life

I do not need more and prefer to get fresh stuff each year. I already have 2-3 extra bottles of it now. Before I go to Africa in 2017 I will buy a new fresh bottle to us.
I see it as being a very small cost compared to the cost of the hunt and other things and I am on a very small fixed income. I also do not try to save a few cents(or dollars) on the bullets/ ammo I load. I pay for what I think are the best bullets(Swift A-Frame), use new brass, fresh primers and powder.
To me there are places to cut corners and these are not one of them. I will use the older spray for when I hunt at home or just give it to a friend and get new.

Agreed but it is illegal in the Socialist Workers Paradise and the cost of a 3hr drive to upstate NY and smuggling it across the border necessitates some ingenuity

you could buy the concentrated version on amazon , then go to internet and there are many videos on diluting it out then soaking clothes in it let dry and when dry all the smell is gone. and bugs wont even touch you. ph had cloud of mosquitos I had none and laughed at him! my buddy does the same, cheap and bug free. smell nasty when mix but when dries no smell at all. check the internet for the recipes and sources. last several washings that way

lcq---Sorry I did not know about the problem of getting it for you.

Also washing your clothes does not kill it off. It is ruined by a dryer. If you was and air dry(even in a dryer) it can last for many weeks/washings.

To add to the idiocy our illustrious Public Health Agency (which I used to work for) allows you to scrub your head and crotch with it but treating clothing is verboten. The US has been treating clothing for 30 years one would think that there is ample scientific evidence the stuff is safe.

And I wonder where that restriction came from? My dad told me that when he was a boy it was all they really had in India. It was sprayed and put on everything. I suspect there is a chance of a rash or some skin irritation that has become and "health issue"

The issue with permethrin on skin is it doesn't bond to skin and the skin has esterases that rapidly degrade it anyway. It is good for de-lousing but it won't give lasting protection on the skin. Permethrin on clothes, DEET on skin and live happy.

The good thing with permethrin is it often means you don't need to use DEET. DEET works but does it suck. Get any in your moth or eyes ( from it running with sweat) and you know it. If DEET comes into contact with most plastics-like in a compass etc then the plastic becomes sticky and any markings are dissolved.

and DEET is a sun sensitizer. you burn way faster
