I really like the Pelican 1700, it's a compact case (internal size is 36" x 14") and it comes with wheels. The Pelican 1700 worked out ideal for my son & I who were both taking a Blaser R8 and 2 scoped barrels for a hunt in South Africa last year. I just purchased some replacement foam from a local foam store who cut the 1 1/2" thick foam into perfect sizes for me ($11 per 36" x 14" piece).
We are preparing for our Australia trip, leaving in 2 weeks time, my son is sticking with his Blazer R8 in .375 H&H and .308 Win, a small number of adjusting cuts were needed for the foam as he had a new 34mm Swarovski Z8i 1-8 x 24, which was definitely bigger than a Swarovski 1-4 x 24 that he used last year, he also needed a place for an extra bold head for the .308 win, last year we took .300 WM which shares the magnum bolt head of the .375.
I had to have a new piece of center foam as I was taking a Krieghoff big five double in .500/416 NE fitted with an RMR red dot and a scoped Blaser R8 in .308 win. I tried to lay out the case several different ways but could not find a way to include the scope on my Blaser .308 barrel unless I had very little foam between the contents. Did anybody find a good working solution for similar guns in a Pelican 1700?
For anyone considering cutting foam I strongly recommend an electric kitchen knife, once I marked out my items, I cut about 2mm inside the line using an electric kitchen knife, any small complicated cuts were finished off with a scalpel craft knife. Total cutting time about 5 minutes.
I'll have to do a quick bit of travel research but I plan to carry my scope for my Blaser R8 in my carry on (Delta to Sydney). Hope this helps anyone wondering what they can get in a Pelican 1700.
