Parents born in Africa, I ended up in NY for some reason...

Hey Everyone,

Wanted to introduce myself as I stumbled upon this forum in researching for my next trip. Long heritage of hunting in the family, both parents were born in Africa (Angola and Mozambique). Have family still living in South Africa that I have been blessed to be able to visit 3 times now and also hunt each time, with my first hunt at the age of 12. Going back for my 4th time later this year!

Began hunting here in the states a couple years back but still doesn't do justice compared to Africa. Currently shooting a Marlin 1895 GBL 45/70 and also have a 30/06 as a second rifle. Look forward to taking the 45.70 over SA and seeing what she can do. Looking to grow my knowledge and my gun collection of course

@MRodrigues1991 Welcome Mike! Since your parents were born in Angola and Mozambique, I'm going to make a wild guess and suggest you might be fluent in Portuguese. So a big Bom Dia to you! I worked a little over 5 years in Angola and bom dia is about half of my Portuguese vocabulary.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. My first hunt at the age of 12 I had taken a two nice size impalas with a 30-06. The special thing about the rifle I used was that it had been in the family for a few generations and had taken quite the array of animals over the years including a few elephants! For the first time hunting I had quite the experience. On one of the impala hunts I was walking with my tracker and came around a large thick bush to only run head on into a rhino not even 15 yards from us. Quite the experience for a 12 year old, let me tell ya...

Second time over i was about 17 years old and I had the opportunity to take a kudu and wildebeest. Using the 30-06 again on the wildebeest and my uncles 375 H&H on the kudu. The kudu went down immediately as well as the wildebeest...except the wildebeest had different plans. I had taken the shot on the wildebeest at about 80 yards. It immediately fell once hit, so we walked up and began looking around the downed wildebeest for blood signs as they believe I hit a second one that was standing behind him. As we were looking around for a trail blood, we heard a stomping sound and the wildebeest has taken off that we surely thought was down for the count! We tracked that wildebeest for 3 days with no luck, the PH found it a week later unfortunately.

The third time was a pretty uneventful trip versus my two hunts and on this trip I had the opportunity to take a blesbuck as well as a gorgeous red hartebeest.

I am considering potentially doing a Cape buffalo hunt this coming October but am not 100% sure yet. Depends on the price and timing but we shall see. If I do hunt it, I still have to discuss further with my PH but am looking to use the 45/70 with Garrett cartridges.

Great guess as you are correct ! Unfortunately I can only speak enough Portuguese to survive if need be, my parents and their generation and older are all fluent.
