Our son is in medical school and will be graduating in the not too distant future. He’s been working very hard towards becoming a surgeon, he’s hoping for cardio thoracic. When he started on this path I had no idea the commitment it takes to become a doctor, let alone a surgeon, and the sacrifices these young people make to achieve that level of expertise is truly quite remarkable. He’ll still have five years of residency after medical school, but after eight years of intense study, research, and rotations, his mother and I were planning on buying him a very nice watch to commemorate his doctorate...been saving for it for the last couple of years.

Best laid plans of mice and men. Was talking to my parents on Friday evening, and guess what? Yep, they had the same idea as we did and already getting him that very nice watch. Grrrr!!! After we finished the call, and poured ourselves another cocktail, my wife and I started discussing what other options we could use our gift money on. We wanted it to be something he would have, use, and cherish for the rest of his life. We threw a bunch of ideas around but none of them really seemed that special, unique, etc. Then I remembered our son telling us at Christmas that the surgeons he’s been doing rotations with all hunt, go on hunting trips, safaris, have great rifles, etc., so asked my wife what she thought about buying him a first class rifle as a graduation gift. He’s never had his own rifle, always borrowed one of mine, it’s something I know he’d love to have, and, more importantly, something he could have and use for the rest of his life. Wife thought it was a great idea.

Yesterday morning we went on EuroOptic’s site to see if they had any of the special rifle packages that they offer occasionally. Found a really nice Sauer 404 SCI package that was within the gift budget so called to order it. Long story short, the rep at EO suggested a Blaser R8 Jaeger instead of the Sauer, for a number of reasons, all of which made sense. They had a R8 in 300 win mag with a grade 9 wood stock that they were offering at the same price as the same rifle with the standard wood stock. The Rifle Is Stunning. We found a nice scope to pair with the win mag, added a Contessa quick release mount, and the type C Blaser case so a second barrel and scope can be added if our son wants to down the road. EO put the package together and treated us very well on the price, i.e. kept it in budget. I’m going to call EO back tomorrow and have them add the wood bolt knob and a pistol grip plate with an engraved red stag buck on it. Those two are not in the budget but will really set that rifle off, so the old man is going to do it, not tell mom, then let mom take the credit for it :). Have a brand new Detroit Leather buffalo hide sling that I bought for another rifle that I ended up selling and it will match very nicely to the R8. Rifle ships tomorrow.

Can’t wait to see the look on our son’s face when he opens the package. Still a while off, but glad things worked out the way they did and sure he’ll cherish the R8 for the rest of his life and hopefully it will bring back fond memories when we’re gone and he’s teaching his grandson or daughter how to shoot and hunt.

Nice, and nobody needs a watch in that budget anyway. See hard work does pay off.

Yes he does have nice parents!(y) Congrats! My son graduated recently as well. He already has his graduation present though, he has been to Africa twice! Plus I have a nice 1911 he covets.

Sounds like a perfect gift to me!

Excellent choice my friend.
You have set him on the right path in life and now again with rifles.
Cheers.

He's our only child and kind of a miracle as the doctors told my wife she couldn't have children. He showed up a couple of years later, so guess God answered our prayers :) Watching him mature over the last few years has been truly rewarding. We've always made him work for the things he wanted, insisted on good grades in school, tried to expose him to as much of the world as possible, and to strive for success but to be humble in the process. Wasn't always easy but have to say it's paid off and he's grown into a fine young man. Proud momma and poppa Fastrig in our house, but truly the credit goes to him for making good decisions, saying No to himself when he needed to, always pushing himself forward, and never being outworked. Thanks for the kind words, they're greatly appreciated.

Yep mom and dad are real good to that young man!

My congrats to your son! Hope he makes a lot of great memories with the new rifle.

My wife and I are in the same position as yourself, we have similar ideals. Your son is a credit to yourselves and to him for the values you have installed in him.
One of the greatest lessons our 15 year old son learned was when we took him to a very deprived school in Namibia. The lesson he learnt from those kids will be with him for the rest of his life. Those kids were happy and had nothing. He now realizes that by having nothing at times can really enrich your life and gives you a good grounding in humility and a deeper understanding of life.
Cheers mate Bob

Good for you Fastrig I'm sure you and your son will both enjoy the R8. Please post some pictures of you and your wife giving your son the R8 so my father @Shootist43 can see what a joy it would be to give his son a R8 with a Left handed action, resting a green synthetic stock with a standard weight barrel in 375 H&H and topped with a 3x9 Swaro scope all packaged nicely in a custom Blaser carrying case from Marco Polo Outfitters in Chesterfield MO.

Congratulations to you and your family on your sons accomplishment, your gift is much more than a fine rifle it is the gift of time, time spent in the field hunting with your son creating wonderful memories and bringing joy to your life knowing that one day your son will pass on his R8 to his son saying "Your Grandfarther gave me this rifle and now I'm giving it to you".

Fastrig.... Well done sir!

I tried to get my parents to buy me a rifle instead of a high school graduation ring; that idea didn't fly so I have a ring I haven't worn in 18 years.

Then my mother surprised me after my college graduation.... with another ring!

Sound like you have two rings to trade in on a Blaser.
Your mother would be so proud of you.
And by proud, I mean pissed...

Fastrig,
Sounds like a fine son, and man. Congrats to him. And congrats to his parents! Well done sir!

Sounds like my kids parents.... only they are 12 & 14..... and spoiled rotten.

Being an only child, he didn’t have to compete with siblings for resources, but we kept as tight a lid on not spoiling him as we could. He always had jobs around the house he was expected to do and if he wanted something that was a bit costly he mowed yards, etc. to earn the money. Having nice things IMO is fine as long as you work for them, appreciate them, and have a sense of humility and gratitude. Made sure he saw what poverty was first hand so he understood how lucky he is. He’s got a big heart though and has put in a lot of volunteer time over the years, especially with helping kids that aren’t as fortunate as he is. His next rotation is in Pediatrics, hoping he still wants to produce grandkids after he’s done :)

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
