Bushbuck because of how secretive they are in cover, if open country would have to give the nod to Springbuck.
I've only hunted Vaal Rhebuck once and really enjoyed the ruggedness and openness of the mountains, could see that as a favorite but somewhat expensive trophy fees. Then you're hunting the same terrain as for Mountain Reedbuck, so may as well add that one! This is an impossible request.

If I had to choose just one it would be kudu or bushbuck…but only one?!? Kudu…no bushbuck…one of them…I think. Oh wait, tracking eland….ugh.

Why is the bushbuck considered special? Can experienced hunters elaborate, please?

I think it is for a few reasons. One is that they are the smallest of the 4 common spiral horns, but have the same affinity for heavy cover and being sneaky, which makes them a harder target to find. Because of that, some people make bushbuck their top priority on a 7-10 day hunt, and never connect with a good ram.

Another reason is that they can have an attitude of a very dangerous animal much larger than they are, especially when wounded.

And lastly, I think some of it is contagious excitement passed on from the PH. Most of them grow up hunting them and there is similar love for them like there is for whitetail in the states. People who grow up and keep hunting them get very very excited about hunting them. That excitement is contagious.

Not surprised to see kudu and eland on here from what I’ve heard about them. Bushbuck has been a pleasant surprise. I thought at least someone would’ve said Waterbuck by now though. Can anyone comment to why that wouldn’t be their choice? Because it ain’t a spiral horn? Not an exciting hunt? Or just generally underrated?

Like, I mentioned before, I don't think I could pick just one. But Waterbuck would be one I wouldn't pass up. It can be a very exciting hunt, and they are underrated in my opinion.

I am. I’m going on a Cape buffalo hunt in Limpopo, with a few extra days in the Free State. Right now I’m budgeted to 1 animal in the 2-3500k range, 1 in the 1-2k range, and then some of the smaller stuff like Impala and Springbok (and my wife requires a warthog, which I ain’t mad over). I was leaning Waterbuck on the expensive side, and either black wildebeest or bushbuck for the middle

I miss the old day when you could shoot 20 of them, I don't think non-residents can do culls anymore.

I cant say I would pass on a good warthog.
