You guys gave me a lot of good info in my other thread. So I went out and looked at a few and bought 1. I already made 1 mistake. One of the ones I looked a had some piece of steel on the left side. I asked the salesman what it was, he responded “I don’t know what the blank that is, I don’t know anything about those things.”(not a lot of ak fans around here).

Well I would like to put a scope on my ak some times. When I looked for a mount I found that piece of steal is for the mount.. So my question is what is the best way to mount a scope without it. I would like it to be good and solid, and be able to take it off if both are possible.

Thanks in advance.

They sell a dust cover replacement with a rail, a forearm with a rail or use the side mount

I use one that's a dust cover deal, added a set screw to keep things super tight and it works pretty good. I just have a red dot on mine.

If you plan to mount a scope on an AK that "piece of steel" on the left side of the receiver is THE way to go. You will have to detach the mount/optic to remove the dust cover for cleaning but that is part of the game.

So why then use an AK?

As others have stated…for bad eyes go with a red dot…

A magnifying optic is of no real value on that platform and actually negates some of its advantages…

So why then use an AK?
For many years now, the majority of shooters in the U.S. (which far outnumbers hunters) own ARs and AKs. In some cases many different models. I am 69 now and still hunt but have never had interest in owning an AK or AR, but carried different versions of ARs for many years in my professional life. And was even checked out on the Draganov at one point in my life. My opinion if you own a gun shop in the U.S. and don't sell AKs and ARs you will go out of business very fast.

Get a red dot sight and use "the piece of steel on the left side of the receiver" for a good quality sturdy mount. The best option and what it is made for. Any reason you dont want to use it?
check out the links below here are a couple good ones

The one that I bought didn’t have the mount on the side. One of the other ones I looked at did. I wish I would have known what it was before I bought. I guess I would have waited to buy as the one that did have the mount seemed like a piece of poo.

I recommend you take a look here. I'll bet your solution is likely contained herein: Krebs Custom sights and optic mounts...
I use the peep sight rear. I discovered it in an AK familiarization class. Works just fine. Accurate to 300 yards as far as I tested so far. Someone else makes a red dot mount that swaps for the rear sight and you could zero the peep first and then change it for the red dot mount. That way you'd have a ready fall back if the dot wen south. Not as convenient as flip up sights on an AR, but it works.

You can put the side rail mount on it

Hello there. I’ve been wanting to introduce myself personally & chat with you about hunting Nilgai. Give me a call sometime…

Best,

+1 Great to deal with. I purchased custom rifle. No issues.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary

Booked with Harold Grinde - Gana River - they sure kill some good ones - who'd you get set up with?
