I just received note from our Trophy Exporter out of SA that Ocean Freight carriers have discontinuted taking trophies to the States? Has anyone else heard this?

"Please also note that ocean freight is not an option at the moment as both carriers we usually utilize will not take hunting trophies or have discontinued their US routings."

That is not good.

In this moment there is no Sea Freight for Hunting Trophies. The shipping lines have an embargo.
Thank you for letting me know. Is there any updates on when this might change? I would think air freight is much more expensive then ocean freight

If I remember correctly back in 2018 or 19 an exporter in Port Elizabeth told me that some sea freight companies will routinely suspend non-perishable shipments during the SA summer to expedite food shipments. I can’t remember the company or can’t verify if true.

Could be strike related.

South Africa’s Strike Clogs Mine Exports, Snarls Container Shipping

A wage strike at South Africa’s port and rail operator has crimped about 75% of the bulk minerals typically exported every day from its mines to global customers, adding to a string of setbacks for the company and worsening shipping congestion in the region.
Over the weekend, workers from South Africa’s Transport and Allied Workers Union rejected a compromise pay deal aimed at ending the dispute.
Transnet SOC owns and operates 16 terminal operations — including containers, bulk, break bulk and automotive sectors — across seven South African ports. It had plans to draw investment and address declining performance when the biggest union embarked on a strike Oct. 6 that spread as other labor groups joined.
The labor strife caused Transnet to declare a force majeure on contracts for the fifth time in the past two years due to unanticipated events that included riots in the KwaZulu-Natal province in July 2021, a cyber attack that incapacitated its container terminal and a fire that disrupted bulk shipments.

My heads just arrived from South Africa, should be delivered tomorrow, thank God. I started this process in Aug 2022 and I was told by one shipper that they would do ocean shipping and one would not. So, I air freighted them home. The cost was initially quoted to me at forty five hundred dollars for air freight to Houston TX. Unfortunately, as soon as they got my heads, they increased it to fifty six hundred dollars, saying their original quote was a guesstimate.... This was the start of my ordeal with them. However, once all the paperwork issues were resolved and the mounts loaded onto the plane, they arrived in Houston in three days, made it through inspection in two days and final delivery in two more days. Overall, the cost was high, but I believe the quicker they get to the US and through the inspections the better off they will be.

Crate contains, Sable, Gemsbok, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Springbok, Blesbok and Impala shoulder mounts and a Zebra rug. With the taxidermy fees of $ three thousand, export flight fees of six thousand, and US import fees and delivery at thirteen hundred, the total cost was ten thousand three hundred. However, the overall time savings is what you have to compare. My heads were dropped off at the taxidermy studio in South Africa the first week of May 2022, and will arrive Dec 29, 2022, so I am happy I don't have to wait years to get them back from local taxidermist.

You had 7 shoulder mounts and a rug done for $3000, that’s incredible! Who was the taxidermist and how’d they turn out?
I paid $5000 for 3 wall pedestal mounts, 3 Euro mounts and 3 rugs.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Yes the amount is correct. Joe Regal Taxidermy in SA did them. They came out great.

Hey there Matt - i would love to understand some more about your bringing trophies home from South Africa in your checked luggage. My PH is holding onto a bushbuck euro and flatskin for me - and i am due back in South Africa in just over a week. He does have the export permit provided by the taxidermist for me. When you have a moment - could we go through the EDC Form and App? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Just finished your book (audio) and ordered a hardback for my Library. You did a wonderful job explaining the way conservation works in Africa, and my wife is interested in reading your book now. Thank you for your work.
