I’m over in NZ doing a bit of hunting and socialising.

Went bush for a few days with the son. Primarily after chamois and a red if the opportunity presented. Weather was a bit hot but otherwise good. We hunted in Fiordland in one of the flattest areas I could find. We walked in and I think it’s fair to say that my son guided me. It’s an area that he hunts often. It was my first hunt in Fiordland. The walk in wasn’t too bad but I’d be lying if I said I found it to be a walk in the park.

Overall we saw 3 reds, none were stags. I shot one of the hinds. (360 yards)

Chamois were plentiful. Saw around 8 or so. Only 2 were bucks and I shot the largest one we saw. Measured about 8 3/4 inches which makes it a fair head for the area (140 yards)

My son didn’t worry about shooting anything. He was only interested in a big stag.

My rifle was the Blaser R8 with the 308 Winchester barrel. 1.5 to 6 Zeiss. Ammunition was OSA factory loaded 165 grain Sierra Gamekings.

Currently getting cleaned up for the next outing, weather dependent. Chasing red and fallow but area also has chamois. Public land, just the son and I. I’m looking forward to it.

Lovely chamois and so much better a hunt than chasing them with a chopper.

Well done. Hell of a job getting that very nice Chamois in the flat country.

Well done.
Priceless days with a good son.
All the best
Spike

Only a couple of more days and I’ll be heading home. No more hunting on this trip. I managed to get in a few hunts and an afternoon fishing.
Weather has been all over the place. Managed to work around it mostly. But, a fly in trip that I was hoping to get in didn’t eventuate due to weather. Oh well, it’ll have to wait until next year.

Got to have a good play with a Tikka T3X in 308 win with a 16 “ barrel. The Kiwis refer to them as bush pigs. With a suppressor they are quite good. Actually I really like them.

The plates are at 100 yards. Probably a 6 or 8 inch diameter ?

I’ll be back next year.

I played tourist and socialised a bit too.

Looks like a great time making memories

Beautiful!
A good friend was in the Navy and saw a lot of the world, but he said the most beautiful place he ever went was New Zealand.

Looks like some beautiful country to hunt!

That looks awesome. I've heard about people doing DIY public land hunts in NZ and would love to do that. Safe to say I'm jealous.

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
