Hi Everyone
Thought I should perhaps share my experience with the Nosler 165 ABLR in my fast twist 270 Win for those who opt to try and load for it.
Components:
1) Starline once fired brass - 69.5 gr H20 capacity. (Brass not cleaned)
2) Murom Magnum Primers - seated 0.005" under flush
3) H1000 powder - 57 gr
4) FL size with Redding Die + APW Mandrels.
5) Seated to 86.95 mm COAL.
I previously struggled quite a bit trying to make the Nosler 165 ABLR shoot well in the rifle with other powders like RL26 and Sonchem S365 (what I typically used for all my 140 gr Bergers which shoot 0.2" groups).
After the last long range shoot with my father, who has a 300 win mag and uses H1000 (typical powder for that size calibre), I was interested to try it in the 270. The results were amazing.
I started with running a simulation in Gordons Reloading Tool to get a better understaning of pressure. GRT gave me a "node" (for what it is worth) at around 56 gr-57 gr H1000. So I set out reloading three test groups all loaded on 57 gr H1000 (55 000 psi), but with different mandrels (0.272", 0.275", 0.276") which translates to roughly 5 thou, 2 thou, and 1 thou under bullet diameter.
Velocity:
Barely any difference in velocity between the three test groups (max 2 fps ave) which is less than what I expected.
3 Shots Ave - 2872 fps
SD - 8.2 fps
Groups
Big, big difference in the groups between them.
5 thou - vertical group around 1 inch
2 thou - clover group around 0.3 inch
1 thou - clover shape around 0.75 inch
Next I am going to test a few different primers and perhaps a bit more powder to get to the 2900 fps mark using the 0.002" under bullet size mandrel (since it shot the best by far in both the 165 ABLR and 140 Bergers using H1000)
Will keep you posted.
