Spent the last week (March 22 thru 30) hunting with @Hogpatrol (Dale) for primarily cull animals at Jakkalskuil Safaris properties in the Northern Cape, South Africa, owned and managed by Kobus De Villiers. Kobus and Dale are good friends and have known eachother for a number of years. Backstory is I met Dale a couple years ago while we were hunting the same camp in the Eastern Cape and have kept in touch since. Anyone that has met and knows Dale, find him just a super all-around guy, whatever the topic. He's given me plenty of hunting and shooting advice.
We flew to Kimberly after a fishing trip to Angola, then a drive of a couple hours to the main ranch near Petrusville. Spent some time before rain started checking rifle zero's, I used a couple camp and PH rifles:
Sako .243 Winchester
Howa .243 Winchester
BRNO ZKK 600 in .30-06
.222 Remington for night hunting
Plus Dale shared his rifles, very generous to say the least.
Got settled into the main camp bunkhouse, that had several suites and plenty of room, plus we had a main area to meet for braai and dinner. Every morning for breakfast and lunch at the main house if not heading out too early. The hospitality of Kobus and his family I can't say enough about, I felt like part of the family. The meals were outstanding! A photo of the camp in a large grove of big eucalyptus trees:

First morning we traveled by Land Cruiser to a number of huge pastures looking for springbuck and especially warthogs, of which there were many. Dale scored first on a warthog.

Later in the morning, I was able to bag a springbuck.

Unfortunately we had some periods of very heavy downpours and storms for the first few days which did affect our hunting plans somewhat, but with 8 hunting days, in the end, it didn't matter. Temperatures were generally not terribly hot, and evenings cooled off to pleasant levels. Even had a day or two of jacket weather in the morning.

The topography was interesting in that it appeared very flat but with shallow drainage gulleys that warthogs could be in and not very visible with knee high bushes and grass.

Many buttes present, which reminded me of our western states.

I had to ask the question about other trophy animals available to add, and not being able to control that urge, asked about a couple animals initially (Blue Wildebeest, possibly a really nice springbuck), not a problem! We drove to another area and spent a half day looking at some wildebeest but none were considered worthy pursuing. Spent the afternoon trying for springbuck and each of us had success before strong storms shut us down.

One afternoon we had the opportunity to hunt a huge pasture for common blesbuck to cull, I counted myself fortunate to have one move into range with the BRNO .30-06 at 250 yards and oblige by standing broadside. This rifle was sighted in with handloads of Hornady 165 grain SST and was very accurate. By the time I left, I developed a real appreciation for this cartridge, having never hunted with it before.

Went to another area to pursue the "blue gnu" the next morning, clear and sunny. Springbuck culling was going on a drainage over and had animals moving around. My PH Volla and I located ourselves in the shade of a large bush and faced a large drainage between a couple hills, spilling out into a large flat plain. A few small groups of springbuck walked through and headed off. Two wildebeest appeared far off and walked towards us. More springbuck appeared and were skittish and moved out of my comfort range. Volla pointed out the older wildebeest bull, standing broadside over 200 yards out, single shot and he ran 50 yards before going down. More springbuck appeared, pausing and moving at an angle away with a mature ram that paused a little too long. I didn't realize how large blue wildebeest were until standing next to him.

Dale and I did two evenings of night critter hunting after it was dark enough. The first evening was very cool requiring warm jackets, hats and gloves. Dale carried his .17 Fireball, I used the camp rifle .222 Remington. The two tracks were sloppy from the rain so some maneuvering had to be done. The amount of moths coming to the spotlight was incredible. Bats were flying through the beam snagging prey. We had multiple aardwolves, bat-eared foxes, a couple African Porcupines, plenty of steenbuck, numerous Springhares and a Genet in a tree, which was enjoyable to see staring down at us. Springhares (giant gerbils) have very luminous eyes that glow bright green in the spotlight and can be seen from a good distance.

A successful evening of springhare hunting. We had two instances shooting springhares where one would stop, "shoot!" then appeared as a miss, next shot dead. Walk out and find two dead springhares. They apparently paused when meeting each other.

Warm sunny afternoons are favorable for warthog activities and after determining no piglets were involved, it was game on! Howa .243 Winchester with 90 grain soft points was good medicine. If you shoot straight for the first shot.

I had also asked about about hunting Tsessebe as they were available on a separate property. I'm not sure why of my attraction but I think they're interesting looking antelope. The ranch to be hunted had white rhino present, which would be great to see, as I had not seen them on previous trips to South Africa. Left Jakkalskuil early morning to get there after sun-up, but looking like rain. We met the property contact at the main gate and headed in, seeing a couple tsessebe after a bit on a sloping hill off a ways but they moved off quickly. We traveled on around a small butte and began seeing various antelope, all of them moving off to brush or over outcrops. In the land cruiser we came to a spot where a few Tsessebe were moving through off a hilltop and had a nice bull pause briefly. The BRNO .30-06 continues to satisfy me with its efficiency as a game cartridge.

Chatting with Dale after having a good morning hunting. Note his relaxed hunting attire. My Sketchers were ruined on the boat trip in Angola otherwise we would have matched.

Volla and I hunted for a good part of a day for a couple potential big Nyala bulls nearby, but only saw young bulls and cows. Jakobus took us to another property by the Orange River to search for a nice bull, looked at a number from glassing points, saw a very nice kudu at distance. Got really lucky on this bull at close range after he came out of a draw while moving to look up a expansive canyon.

Last day of hunting was for the Nyala in the morning, came back and had a nice campfire and dinner, finished packing up for an early drive to the Kimberly Airport. I thought I had policed my gear and clothes pretty well BUT had a few spent cartridge cases....airport security I guess thought I wanted them as keepsakes, "NO THANKS THEY ARE YOURS".

Was able to see some new-to-me animals, there were a substantial number of vultures present on the ranch, Cape and possibly White-backed? Apology for the terrible pic. Kori bustards were seen nearly every day, and a smaller bustard, Black Korhann, was pretty common to flush while driving around. Also a flock of a dozen plus blue cranes. Seeing multiple white rhinos was nice.

Final pic at camp. Sad to see it end. Really enjoyed being guided by PH's Jakobus De Villiers and Volla Verwey. I would certainly enjoy another hunt here at Jakkalskuil.

Ron, great adventure with you and Kobus. You took some nice trophies under difficult conditions.

Awesome time was had on both trips, enjoyed everything, Dale. Hard to face the reality of being not on vacation any longer. Enjoyed watching you shoot!

Pix of fish? Or is there a separate report for that which I missed?
Love the cull concept and glad you added a couple trophies. I have tsessebe and nyala on my wish list for later this summer and you threw some fuel onto that fire for sure!
Thanks for posting. Can’t believe you didn’t shoot a jackal for its skull while you were there. . . :ROFLMAO:
