Sitting around social distancing has me dreaming about what I will do when I get out of this prison. I found that a non-exportable elephant with @Ndumo Hunting Safaris advertised on their website was under 20k. Ok, a lot....elephant hunts are expensive....really? An elephant hunt in a hunters paradise at under 20k?

A plains game hunt will get you up there in a hurry. As this thread shows https://www.africahunting.com/threads/what-is-the-true-cost-of-my-african-hunting-safari.7139/

The true cost of a safari isn't just what your outfitter charges. Taxidermy basically doubles the cost in my experience. The more animals the greater the cost! And then there is import fees and finding a place to put all that stuff.

Hunting North America is usually a one animal affair. So, if you like the time in the field more, or equal to, the number of animals, a non-export elephant may actually make a lot of sense!

I suspect a non-export in RSA would be even cheaper.....

...shop around a little....

Food for thought....

.......

:)

You can do a tuskless hunt in Zim for much less than that. Cheaper than a buffalo hunt there in most cases. Probably the best DG value out there.

Non-exportable hunts are the real value hunts for sure! You could go on few non-trophy elephant hunts vs one trophy elephant hunt.

100% agree with you Pheroze. Non-trophy bull, cow, or tuskless ele are some of the very best and most affordable DG hunts in Africa today. Right area with the right outfitter it may be the best hunt of your life. I did a hunt tuskless hunt in Zim in 2018 for under $12k. 10 days/$750 a day and $4k trophy fee. I hope to do it again sometime very soon!

Pheroze, I have a dream on my 75th birthday an own use 21-28 day hunt in the Caprivi. I have almost no space for anything else, so photos of elephant, hippo, another croc, another buffalo and maybe a euro of something special such as red lechwe.
I love dreaming!

Non-trophy / own use elephant is the only way I'll be able to afford it. Before Coronavirus and the double hit I took (market down plus lost my part-time retirement - ie. travel funding - job) we had a quote from an outfitter at DSC for 2021: 14 days, trophy buffalo, non-trophy elephant and lechwe including observer for under $30k. Brown bear hunts in Alaska on a boat run $35K plus for 10 days. My plan is to just defer the trip and see how the budget is for 2022 or 2023.

Not sure if you’re aware, but in at least one concession, red lechwe is on own-use permit too. I took one last year, an old worn down bull. All the general plains game will have an own-use quota as well.

This may be an interesting thread. Non-exportable, and tuskless could be interesting. Apart from Zim, where else to look?
Apart from Zim, there was not so much offers in other countries on this forum.

I believe Namibia has some opportunities for Own Use and non-trophy bulls. Not sure about tuskless or ration cow ele in Namibia. @Ndumo Safaris would be a good place to start looking there and maybe Karl could advise on opportunities in Namibia?
I’m pretty sure I recall seeing a few opportunities for tuskless in Zambia. @spike.t could probably give some insight on “less expensive than trophy bull” opportunities.
Hopefully some time in the future Botswana will have some opportunities too, once we get past this Covid Bullshit and things get rolling again. We can hope anyway! :)

Don't count out the possibility of some really, really good deals could be available as soon as it looks like the travel bans and airlines open back up. Lots of quota's and lots of upfront money put out and guys looking to just recover expenses. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a 30-40lb+ exportable in Bots for maybe $25K all in and I'm not being sarcastic. In fact, three.

Remember guys Zim are selling tuskless cows. We sell own use elephant which may be an old dry cow (with tusks), or a broken down bull. If someone tells me he is willing to shoot a tuskless cow, we will do it for less than advertised, as I believe thats sound management of the elephant herds.

As you said, we had a few cancellations, so if anyone is looking for an exportable bull, a non export bull or a tuskless cow or old cow, we will have deals coming up...
Thanks for the mention, Pheroze

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
