Earlier this year I bought a NIB, unfired LH Win Safari Classic in .375 H&H. Liked the rifle, hated the factory stock - it just didn't fit me.

I sent it to John Vest of Redmond, OR with dropped bottom metal to hold 4 down in the magazine. John did a great job with patient haste and I received the rifle back fromhim yesterday. I wanted to see how it fit and shot before completing it. MUCH better fit and balance and a bit lighter at 9-3/4 lbs. The heavy factory barrel that I did not like originally seems to reduce muzzle jump and is a bit steadier while shooting.

John McLaughlin will finish the job, finishing metal and stock.

Sadly, this rifle will not be ready for my TZ trip next month. It will get its chance, though.

Nice. Very nice!

Captain Munro...

Thanks for your comment. Fitting the Sunnyhill dropped bottom metal gave John some fits, but it finished up nicely and it loads four down and feeds with no trouble at all. It has the factory trigger, which seems a mite short in the guard bow and the pull is a bit heavy - might see if it can be replaced with something a bit better.

Overall, I really like the rifle and recoil is pretty mild.

Wow that grain is about perfect! Not too much, nice and straight. I can’t wait to see how it looks after a good soak of oil! Is this from a different factory stock, or was it made by scratch?

This stock was cut from a blank that I got from my brother, who cut a very old (and large) English walnut tree in Oregon many years ago. It is fairly dense and reddish, I thought it would work well on a large caliber rifle.

That's really cool, gives a good story behind the stock. Every gun has a story!
