Hello All, new member from Texas and posting for the first time. Sitting here in Doha with ample time on my hands and thought it seemed like a great time to send my first post. I embarked on my very first safari yesterday and wanted to take a minute to thank the many of you that have posted such great and generous advice for those that come after you.
My adventure started off somewhat mundane, except for the excitement of finally realizing a dream that I’ve had since I was kid of 9 or 10 yrs old!!! No problems at check-in, flight left on time. Around 30mins mins after takeoff, pilots diverted the flight to New York for a medical energy with one of the crew. Ultimately, crew member ended up recovering nicely, which was great news! While on the ground in New York, a mechanical gremlin popped up. Better at that moment vs. 35,000 ft., 1/2 way across the Atlantic! Flight was delayed about 5hrs, which resulted in a missed connection to Windhoek, and thus ample time for this post (now have 17hr layover). Instead of an easy (relatively) one-stop 28hour flight to Windhoek, I end up with a 51hour, 3 leg, 3 carrier flight that arrives in Windhoek 2hrs after my scheduled Sunday morning flight to Katima (gateway to Caprivi). In case anyone is wondering, the next flight to Katima is….Monday?, nope!…Tuesday? negative…Wednesday?….bingo! So, in the spirit of “it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than this” to discourage me, I’ll pursue plains game east of Windhoek for a few days, then head North for buff later in the week.

Lessons learned so far? 1. Sometimes the adventure starts a lot earlier in the trip than we expect! 2) At times the entire world is a little TIA!! and 3) these slight inconveniences only deepen the experience and memories- the best of which is yet to come!

Thanks again to all that unknowingly contributed to my long-dreamed adventure. Stay safe and travel well!

Wow, TX. Sorry for the slow start, but good on you for the positive attitude.

Safe travels and good luck.

Welcome to AH TXdawg! A rough start but all part of the journey. Safe travel and enjoy all that Africa has to offer.

Great attitude.
Keep us updated on your adventure.

With that great outlook you are sure to have a great safari. The Caprivi is a special place for sure. Who are you hunting with? Anything besides buffalo in the menu? Hope he rest of your travel goes smoothly. Looking forward to the report and pictures.

It is no joke getting all the way to Katima and then home! Have a great safari

Life’s travels have a way of bouncing around, sounds like you got a great outlook on it, you could sit and stew on it, or adapt to it, you seem to have adapted that will serve you well, good luck, enjoy the ride

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
