Greetings all,

I’ve enjoyed researching and lurking this forum for a year or two.

My wife and I are fortunate enough to be able to hunt deer, turkey, grouse, coyote without ever stepping off our farm’s woodlot. While Vermont has gone mad politically and most of the farms have disappeared in recent decades, there’s still a backbone of rural people that work and hunt the land. We raise beef here and there’s land around. Some of you would make good neighbors if you like the cold! Come on up.

More germane to the forum, we are in the earliest stages of planning our first African hunt (my only prior experience in Africa was a one-off work project in Uganda 15 years ago). I’ve itched to hunt Africa for about twenty years. I read Ruark’s Something of Value in a sitting long ago. My wife’s pistol instructor put the bee in her bonnet a couple years ago and suggested some friends in SA. As total neophytes, we didn’t understand the stocked and fenced practices there and quickly balked at that idea.

Now a prompt for all of you. Suggestions and reality checks are most welcome.

We’re both in our 40s and remain physically tough, accustomed to navigating rough up and down terrain daily.

Wildness, remoteness and a sporting hunt matters far more to use than any one particular trophy. We are interested in Plains Game with Cape Buffalo becoming a budding interest for me.

We’re clear-eyed about all-in costs but we’re not particularly affluent people. The stated desires need to be balanced with budget implications.

All of that being said, we’ve tied ourselves into knots! Mozambique, Zambia, Selous, Namibia for economy’s sake?

Where to sharpen our focus!?

Thanks for reading.

Welcome to AH! Zambia and Tanzania (the Selous) are typically a more expensive hunt. I'd focus first on Moz and Namibia. But deals can be found in any of the countries from time to time.

:S Welcome:

Welcome from NW NM, USA! Attend some of the hunting shows, talk with the outfitters and ph's. You will learn a lot.

Welcome to AH Roland Robinson!

Greetings Roland Robinson,

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

When you can spare a minute, I invite you to have a look into the Khomas Safaris website.

It is a shame the communists have over-run Vermont.
They’ve done the same throughout many cities, all across the USA, including Anchorage, Alaska lately.
And of course with these oatmeal slurping bullys, the cost of living, (via their unreasonably high tax structure), climbs swiftly.

On a happier note, there are wild places to hunt in various African countries, including South Africa.
Finding them amongst the numerous High-Fenced, “Put and Take” type outfits is the trick.

Regarding Buffalo Hunting, the Caprivi Strip of Namibia offers some of the best.
It is generally not fenced and the large herds roam freely, along with plentiful elephant, lion, etc., etc.
The environment varies from thick green riverine forest (I dare call it jungle), to open short grass, huge flood plain.
Caprivi-Zambezi Area dangerous game hunts are not usually low priced though.
But then, you do get what you pay for.

Several other countries offer quite good and not high fenced buffalo hunts, including but not limited to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

As for “plains game” species, that are wild (self sustaining herds - not pen raised), Namibia consistently affords some of the lowest pricing.
Much of Namibia is not high fenced but that is slowly but surely changing with the times.
However, the silver lining to that cloud is that Namibia’s many private hunting lands are usually huge.

A 5,000 acre holding in Namibia would be like a 50 acre holding across most of the USA.
My boss’s house sets on 20,000 acres and it’s festooned with plentiful and diversified species of native game animals, from huge eland, kudu and sable, down to the tiny steinbok plus ducks, geese and grouse.
He leases hunting rights on neighboring lands, totalling somewhere around 450,000 to 500,000 acres.
Obviously I advertise for and am partial to Khomas Safaris.
They have treated myself, my family and my friends like royalty.

With that, there are numerous hunt reports in the forum from past and present clients, of Khomas Safari Company, that are worth reading.
These include mine, beginning I think, back in Sept. 2017.
As we speak, fellow member, Andrew Short is hunting with Khomas Safaris and he is sporadically posting photos, when he is back at the camp for supper and to use the Internet connection.

When you can spare a moment, I invite you to have a look into the Khomas Safaris website.

Again, I favor the outfit that I work for but, wether you book with us or some other safari company, in Namibia or whichever country you choose, as long as you thoroughly vet said safari company and avoid the rainy season, you will have a wonderful life changing experience.

Glad you joined and Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
