Hunted
Sweden, Namibia
Hello!

My name is Pelle Olstam, I`m 41 years old. Lives in Sweden with my fiancee and our son.
I made my first trip to Africa in may 2019. Me and some friends visited Namibia on a 6 day plains game hunt. We had a great experience and are making plans to go back again next year.
Back home I mostly hunt moose, wildboar, red deer, fallow deer and roe deer.
Got into hunting in 2003 and it`s by far my biggest interest!
Thank you for letting me join your Community.

Best regards Pelle.

Hello and welcome!

Welcome aboard Pelle. What caliber rifle do you use on your Swedish hunts? The reason I'm curious is because for the last 23 years my go to rifle for deer sized animals has been the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. I hand load for it and get about the same velocity as the modern 6.5(s.) Since you are posting, how about a report and photos of your previous hunts?

Welcome!!

Thank you Shootist43!
For moose I use my Sako 85 Kodiak .375 h&h. I really like that rifle but I`ve only had it for about a year. When hunting deer and wildboar I like .270 win. I`ve had it in Three differtent rifles so far, Sako 75, Blaser R8 and Sauer 404, but right now i`m waiting for my new Sako 85 Carbon Wolf, also .270 win.
6.5 x 55 Swedish is very common over here (of course…). I`m a handloader myself and I`ve used it in a Blaser R93. Shot moose, deer and wilboar with it. I`ts a very good calibre for hunting in Sweden if you use a good bullet. For bigger game like moose I like the heaviest bullet possible in the 6,5. For the other game like deer and wildboar I used Hornady SST 140 grain. Very effective but makes quite a mess if you hit bone. The 6,5 is also very good for practice here in Sweden, common and cheap ammunition. 6,5 x 55 is still very popular here and many shooters use it for long range shooting as well.
I will post some reports and pictures from previous hunts as soon as I have the time.
Thanks again, Pelle

Pelle, welcome to AH! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your countryside.

Welcome Pelle, you will enjoy this forum, a lot of knowledgeable members. You will notice the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser is currently in discussion...it maybe common in your country, but we understand it to be a great caliber to use as small to medium game..enjoy your time on the forum, it really is a great forum to be part of ...(y)(y):LOL:

Welcome to AH Pelle! Please share your time in Africa with us.

Welcome! I’ve been luckily enough to visit Sweden twice for fly fishing trips. Your country’s laws regarding free roaming of the countryside (allemansrätten) hiking/camping/fishing etc are probably the best in the world!

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
