Hello,

I am hunting for a double rilfe side by side. I already own a double in 30-06 asper rifle o/u and several other rifles Bolt action and semi Auto in 300mag, 308, 30-06, 6.8mm and 223.

I do most of my hunting in North America (big and small) but will hunt soon in Europe for wildboars and eventually Africa. As we speak (might change on day) I will not hunt the big five family but smaller game.

The reason I want to buy a double side by side has been debated in my head. I will have one. It will be my first rifle for all the hunting I will do in the future. My 30-06 double will be the backup rifle. I just want one period. It's on the bucket list, has been for a while. For the last four years I have been looking at doubles. Oh! It's time...

After review, reading, thinking, more reading, I am now down to two choices:

1- Chapuis
2- Krieghoff

Could you share your experience with those 2?
Is Krieghoff worth the difference? (Bit more $)?
Accuracy, reliability etc...

Thank you for your help.

had a chapuis in 9.3x74r and it was a real nice little double. shot boar in europe with it and some african stuff inc buff. one of my favourite cals as some know :) sold it to a friend as had bought my jeffery dbl in same cal so didnt need both. dont know anything about the k guns as i dont like the looks of them, so would never have one, but plenty like them so they must be fine if thats what you like :E Big Grin:

I have chapuis in 9.3x74r it is very accurate and just plain fun to shoot. It will take care of everything you mentioned . I have shot everything from Diker to cape eland with mine. I have no experience with K guns. You might also want to look at Merkels in the same price range and If you are willing to go up a bit in price Heym and Verry Carron also make a really nice doubles.

I'm an ex trapshooter and I have been away for awhile. That being said, Krieghoff K-80's were one of the most popular guns on the line. They did, however have a lot of little parts an d springs inside and were prone to breakdown. Naturally, you are not going to shoot a double rifle as much you would a competition gun,but I would look into the internals if it was me. A breakdown half a world away from home would be a major disappointment. I have a Searcy 500 P.H. model that I like. accurate and affordable. It's never been to Africa, but I've shot it on paper and game here in the U.S. I would recommend to anyone to take a look. J.M.O

Thanks, Searcy rifles seem very nice but never handled one before. Will look into it. Thanks for the answer. You are right. Competiton guns are like Formula ones. They rock but springs and parts do break because of intensive shooting. Same in pistol shooting. Always bring more ammo than needed and spare parts. I believe that if you shoot a good quality hunting rifle and do your maintenance on it, you practice drills, you have less chance to have troubles. I use to go hunting with 3 rifles. Went down to two. This year was my first time with only one. I have to say I was extra careful but will go back to travel with 2. Just in case.

Cordially,

Kreighoff uses a lever to cock the gun instead of a safety, tried this a few times when I was looking for a 416/500, I found it a long stroke and did not like it. Anyone that is used to a traditional safety on a double rifle or shotgun would need to really Chang the skill set.

I decided to buy a Heym rifle. It will be my hunting partner for a long time.

a fine choice, did you order one of the new model 89's?

also, people mentioned Searcy... DO NOT BUY SEARCY RIFLES! if you want more info on this warning then do a search for Searcy on this forum.

88 ph model. It will take a few months before I get it but I am glad I made a decision. I almost flipped a coin between Chapuis and Krieghoff. I even called the Krieghoff dealer to order but chickened out at the last second. The Chapuis was out there too for a long time. My wife offered to buy two so I would shut up about it. The Heym was just a dream until I found an expert on doubles I could talk with. He changed my mind for a Heym.

I'm in your same boat, I ordered my Heym rifle a few months ago. my rifle will take quite a long time to make due to rather extensive engraving.

what caliber did you order the rifle in?

@matt85 what caliber did you order your new rifle in?

@vandoo have you made a decision on the make yet? Have you looked at Verney Caron?

When I was looking for a double I did a bunch of research in my price range and also came down to Chapuis and
Krieghoff. I ended up finding a "better" deal on the Krieghoff in .470 and I have never looked back. It is a great double and
should I need service or repairs there is a there is a Krieghoff service shop right in PA.
