Shot a really nifty 505 Gibbs the other day, which started an itch that is tuff to reach. In the safe I have a 400H&H which I have used to shoot Buff, a 458 Lott which I have shot Buff and a 1905 Gibbs 450NE which I have shot a Tuskless with.
This is a moronic question to ask this forum as most will say scratch the itch, but with the guns that I have putting together another gun is the cost of another Buff or a Tuskless.
Do I need a bigger gun??

Take two aspirins and lay down in a cool, dark, quiet room for a couple of hours. It won't make the itch go away, but it will give you a little time to do some serious planning.

what you already have will take t-rex with proper shot placement and bullet construction.get another trophy and have a great time, now if you just want another gun then get it.but you dont need it.

Bro, Im fighting the same itch. I have a 577NE in the safe that I bought then sold to by a Merkel 470 SxS, then decided I couldn't live without the 577 and bought it back. Im currently itching for a 4 Bore. It started out as needing a 4 Bore cartridge gun, now has morphed into a muzzleloader. I may be able a scratch it with a 8 Bore; but I'll probably always want the 4 Bore. Even I know buying a 72 or 75 cal wouldn't come close to reaching that itchy spot.

Sooooo once compromise (if your itch is in the right spot), might be something like a single shot. My 577 is a single shot. It was built on a Ruger No1 by SSK industries J D Jones. It was way cheaper than a SxS and for me just as traditional. If that's not enough Im thinking about having a 470 NE built on another No1.

....but I do get the cost of the rifle VS cost of a hunt. BTW the 577 has never been blooded. So would you rather have that one rifle that you dragged all over the world or another one that you hunted with only once?

What was it about the 505 Gibbs that grabbed your attention?

The size of the hole at the end of the barrel
The shape, size, heft and history of the cartridge
The handiness of an 11# bolt gun
When you threw the gun to your shoulder the grass smelled different and the birds sounded is if from some place else, even though you were shooting at paper you were in that same spot in the silence after the shot.

Clayton, I need more than asprin

As much as I always like a new firearm I am at the point that I would rather go on another hunt. If I had lots of money then I would do both, but I do not so I choose the hunt. I have 3 rifles and 2 pistols I would like(but do not need) and they will just have to not be in my safe because I want to hunt with the many I have already.

But that is just me. You should do what you like and not what we think.

You got it bad. God help when it relapses on you. There's only one thing to do. You know if you don't, it's going to nag on you throughout all eternity.

Build/buy the gun. Take the hunt BRICKBURN mentioned and shoot T-Rex with it. Of coarse depending on where you live, you may not be able bring your trophy home with you. Oh well, we can't have everything.

Go hunting and learn to live with the itch....

Concensus seems to be go hunting. Sage advice I'd say.

I think you are getting really bad advice in this thread. Denying yourself this one luxury, particularly someone who has obviously work as hard as you; a man who understands a fine rifle and feels the nuances of each caliber. If you follow the advice you are getting here from your so-called "friends" you will not be living true to your nature. The disruption in your psyche will grow like a cancer and will infect your soul. You will notice disruption in your personal and professional life. Sleep will elude you and constipation will plagued you.

You can avoid all of this inner turmoil if you submit to the voices you hear. Believe in them. Would you lie to you?! You can manage the expense; you will make up the cost by cutting back on other luxuries that don't form a part of your inner happiness such as food. Who needs food really? Beer is a lot cheaper and packed full of vitamins and minerals. It also makes you better looking and much more charming. You will feast on your inner happiness and Guinness. Throw in some protein powder and you are probably fine. Eating is for wimps and the uninformed. Now, go my friend, live in peace and happiness. Your destiny is just a phone call away...;)

Seriously, buy the rifle:)

Go.

Now, commit!

You will thank me later, honest.(y)

I need another gun like a hole in the head but that never stopped me from snapping up a bargain. But when given a choice between another hunt or more guns I just bring out the suitcase and the feeling goes away

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
