NAMIBIA: Booked Our Bowhunt With Otjandaue Hunting Safaris In Namibia

My daughter and I settled on Otjandaue in Namibia for our first African hunt destination. Roy van der Merwe and his family will be our PH and hosts. They are located near Omaruru and from the pictures we've seen, the area looks incredible. We are looking forward to this trip and don't have a lot of expectations except to have a great time there.
Would love to hear from others that have either hunted with Roy or have experiences hunting in that area of Namibia. Kudu is our main objective for Emily, I'd like to take a Mt Zebra if the opportunity arises, and we have a few other animals on our list. We have also got some days set aside strictly for sightseeing excursions. Who knows, we might even do a tandem skydive over the desert?

I bowhunted close to Omaruru and loved it! Mt zebra is tough to get to water in the day time, they also like to circle to check wind.

Spent 3 weeks hunting with Ongariwanda near Omaruru 18 months ago now .
Wonderful area for hunting , you will have a ball .
All the people we met were outstanding with ther hospitality and friendliness .

You will not regret to have chosen Otjandaue Hunting Safaris. I have hunted with Roy on two occasions and have only words of praise towards him and his outfit. You will love it –guaranteed! Beware though, Celia the cook will make you put on some weight for sure as everything she cooks is simply delicious ( I still dream of the incredible oryx and stuffed cheese meatballs).

Roy and Janet are top-notch in every sense. Do allow yourselves some time and listen to the yarns of Uncle Kobus…not to be missed! As for the hunitng…espectacular. Mind you I did rifle hunts, but the amount and quality of animals is incredible.

In short, they are utterly honest, hard-working, great hosts. I cannot wait to get back there again. Rest assure you are in the best hands.

My buddy and I are scheduled to hunt with Roy in May. I met with Roy while he and his family were here in Denver. This is the second time I met with him. Great people!

I have 3 action cameras and camcorder for our hunt, plus my Nixon slr. We're hunting with bows, spot and stalk. You'll get to see plenty of terrain from my videos when I post my report on AH.

My good buddy is after kudu and I'm after gemsbok. If we get anything else, that'll be gravy as we're only hunting for 7 days.

It's a long wait for sure, but we actually started this process in the summer of 2015. I don't make enough money normally to pay for a trip like this, so we started doing our research then to determine a 'ball park figure' of how much money we'd need to go and do all of the things we wanted to do. Once that was complete, I threw myself into working overtime this past year. Now we have an outfitter, we have 90% of our gear, and now it's down to trip insurance, figuring out the required paperwork, travel docs, medical shots required, etc. So it seems like a long ways away, but I know the time will fly. Helps to break it down in steps as well. We buy the plane tickets in 228 days, so that's in September, and that's right around the corner. We'll be on our way in no time. LOL

Hey bushwacker,

You did the smart thing. I was just like you as I planned this trip for myself and my buddy who is a police officer. He doesn't make a lot, so I had to find the best deals possible. I've planned for Africa for the last 5 years until my wife finally told me to just book it. My buddy, he jumped in two years ago when I told him what I had planned.

Just a word of advice from my planning, when you buy your plane tickets, try to stick with one airline all the way. I ended up booking with British Airways as I'm hunting with bows and they have no issues with that. A long flight from Denver through London and Joburg, but very inexpensive and our bags go all the way through. This helped my buddy with his budget.

Also, I purchased a bow case that would hold both our bows to help out, and some other gear that he wouldn't have to buy. Roy has been great with working with us. My hope is that my wife and kids will be able to go in a few years.

Make sure you ask Roy for some trail camera pictures as I purchased four new game cameras for him while in Denver. He should be able to have some nice shots for you.

Thanks, yes, I've been busy on the research and figured out how to find the lowest airfares with the fewest stops. Googleflights.com, best way to compare airfares. We'll take off out of Houston, one stop in Doha, and then straight into Windhoek. I bought us a double bow case, then decided both our bows would be crammed in there, so I bought a second, one for her and one for me. And I almost gave him a couple of my cameras while I was in Dallas but didn't. I'll put that on my list for next year, give him a couple more cameras when we see him at the 2018 DSC show.

I bought a Predator action camera, may buy another before we go. I like it better than a GoPro. You can hook it up to an external battery and then remotely control it via WiFi from your phone. Battery will last for several days.

That camera sounds great. Roy actually paid me back for the cameras. Our local Gander was closing, so it was a great deal.

I've got one camera that works by remote, four batteries compatible between the two cameras I have and then the tripod with camcorder.

Sounds like you guys have everything set. Should be fun!
