Long flight, rifle sighted in. Next day we go hunting.
We all spotted the three sable as they spotted us and started walking away when the biggest one stopped to scrape his horns on a bush and my PH said shoot as I was already lined up, bam a hit.
All three Sable run away, mine veers off into the brush. My trackers find him down in the grass a couple hundred yards away, and I think he is down for good, but I am wrong, way wrong. My PH says shoot him again, and all I can see are the tops of his horns. He says shoot through the grass, I do, and shoot too high, missed. The Sable gets up and runs a mile away before the trackers find him again, dead. Lung shot.
My PH and trackers are excited for me. I figured this was typical. Then we get back to the skinning shed where the property owner, his son and the skinners are also excited for me. I think this is a typical reaction for guest hunters. Then they get the tape measure and say 45”. I smile and say, is that good? The owner says the biggest one from this property, and my PH (Jurie Meyer of Jurie Meyer Safaris) says it's one of the biggest ones he has got.
Great! Good start to my 10 day hunt in Limpopo, South Africa.
