Long flight, rifle sighted in. Next day we go hunting.

We all spotted the three sable as they spotted us and started walking away when the biggest one stopped to scrape his horns on a bush and my PH said shoot as I was already lined up, bam a hit.

All three Sable run away, mine veers off into the brush. My trackers find him down in the grass a couple hundred yards away, and I think he is down for good, but I am wrong, way wrong. My PH says shoot him again, and all I can see are the tops of his horns. He says shoot through the grass, I do, and shoot too high, missed. The Sable gets up and runs a mile away before the trackers find him again, dead. Lung shot.

My PH and trackers are excited for me. I figured this was typical. Then we get back to the skinning shed where the property owner, his son and the skinners are also excited for me. I think this is a typical reaction for guest hunters. Then they get the tape measure and say 45”. I smile and say, is that good? The owner says the biggest one from this property, and my PH (Jurie Meyer of Jurie Meyer Safaris) says it's one of the biggest ones he has got.
Great! Good start to my 10 day hunt in Limpopo, South Africa.

Well hell. It’s all downhill from here.

It’s been my experience that sable need a lot of killing. That’s a good one. Congratulations!

Excellent start to a first safari!! :D Beers:

Very hard to top a big, Beautiful sable-congratulations !

Details, man! Details! Where are you hunting?

Massive Sable bull…. Good secondary growth and still has great tips. Hell yeah…

Hope the rest of your hunt goes this well!!

Awesome

No animals shot on day two.
Of the 10 days hunting, I did get 10 animals.
We would get up at sunrise and hunt until noon, go back for lunch and then head out at 3:00 till dark.
The mornings were very cold, (sweaters and jackets) and then warmed up at around 10:00. Shorts and tee shirts.
The property had so many animals, it is hard to remember. I recommend if you go to Africa that you keep a journal or lots of daily pictures.
Second day, we spot and stocked, Blue Wildebeest, Eland, Gemsbuck, Kudu, Impala, Zebra and Warthog.
They were either too young or too fast.
I did see many other animals like blue, black and golden Wildebeest, Tsessebe, Buffalo, Sable, Giraffes, Duiker, Nyala and Waterbuck.

Day 3
I shot my Impala in the morning and a Zebra in the afternoon.
It was hard to get the sights on the Impala and Zebra because of all the eyeballs watching, but we finally found two that stood still long enough to get a shot.
The average distance was 80 to 150 yards. Hitting the vitals using the truck or sticks, they did not go far.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
