Hello to all,

My friend Alonso and I just returned from a 12 day Safari, October 1-12, at the Mahimba Game Reserve in Mozambique with Mashambanzou Safaris. Owner/Operator PH Grant Taylor. Grant has several camps throughout Mozambique. Alonso and I went to Mahimba camp, which is right at the mouth of the Zambezi river. We flew in a bush plane from Beira airport to camp, which took approximately 90 minutes. Mahimba is approximately 70 km from the coast, and it's very beautiful and remote. It's a combination of savannah and tropical forest. There are hundreds of buffalo, and you hunt the herds looking for the best bulls. There is also Reedbuck, giant Bushbuck, Roosevelt Sable, Waterbuck, Bushpig, Warthog, and in the Macarau River, plenty of crocodiles and hippo. The river is only a couple of kms from camp. We also saw a herd of elephants, and it was a real experience.

The food is venison you hunt, and they have soda, bottled water, beer, and South African wine available. The cabin where we stayed was comfortable with cold and hot water, and the staff service is excellent. They do your laundry daily. Everyone did their best to make our stay comfortable. Our PH was Martin Snyman, a young guy and very energetic. His trackers were Domingo, Manuel, Jofensio, and Sunday. They track buffalo in the thickest of the bush. You have to see it to believe it. The skinners Peter and Jaimie did my capes very well according to my specs.

We were lucky enough to get all the species at Mahimba except hippo and elephant, but we did not have those on our trophy wish list. There are no predators like lion, leopards, or Hyena because the moist in the ground roots their paws so the buffalo grow to full potential.

You need to take malaria medication for sure, it's endemic to the area and plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellant. The best time to go is October when they have burned plenty of the old grass, and the visibility is better. It's hot in October, but like I said, it's the best time to hunt Mahimba.

Next trip, we want to go to Grant's concession in Niassa. He has block R-4 by the Romuva River. There's many plains game species available over there, like the Niassa wildebeest endemic to that area. First trip to Africa, so now we have the "Africa bug" and are saving every pennie to go back ASAP. For this safari, we took with us a 375H&H and a 300 win mag. For the Niassa trip, we are planning to take a 400 H&H and the trusty 300. Attached are some photos of the adventure.

Best regards,

Grant Taylor has a great operation in Mozambique. From the Zambezi Delta to the Niassa Mashambanzou's hunting opportunities are extraordinary. My son and I have taken great buff, nyala, sable and the Livingstone eland of a lifetime.

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
