NRA,
I have decided not to go with the Sako, and I was thinking about the Montana's African model. I spoke with a representative on the phone today and he seemed quite knowledgeable! I'm assured the left hand model is 8+ pounds in 404 Jeffery. Does anyone here have any experience with the 404 in thier long action?
All in all, it seems like a great option for a South paw. At the advertised price it's a humdinger of a deal for a 404 Jeffery

I saw that rifle on their website but from memory the 404 was said to weigh 6lb 15oz which i thought was light for calibre. I'd seriously consider one but by the time it was converted to aussie dollars and importers added their costs there's no way it'd be less than $4k here.

Seems like a great rifle, smart move by them too. The cal certainly seems to be makjng a resurgence and they have the market at that price point to themselves.

You can always add weight to the buttstock if push comes to shove...

JP, at close to 7lbs bare rifle I think it is about perfect.
By the time you add scope, mounts, sling and a mag of ammo you will be 8 - 8.5 lbs.
What a perfect carry/shooting weight. I don't think a 404 at that weight would be objectionable at all, in fact probably quite pleasant, if only there was someway of overcoming the abhorrent import costs of firearms Downunder !!!!

When i eventually get a larger bore rifle I don't think I'd want a scope on it. I love iron sights too much. Just have to try and justify buying a 404J to hunt hog deer!

Having said that you're completely correct in what you say.

And yes it's bloody ridiculous cost wise.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
