Any advice on best method to shorten length of pull for model 70 safari express? It’s a deal breaker, haven’t fired it yet but it feels massive and the specs all say it’s lop is 13 3/4… all my other rifles are 13 5/8

For 1/8” the only option I could think of is find a sympathetic gunsmith and have him thin the decelerator pad that amount and reinstall - maybe having to glue it.

they do feel substantially beefier than a standard m-70 sporter stock. That might be making it feel worse than the 1/8” actually does.

I have had several wood and various synthetic/ fiberglass stocks LOP’s reduced by a 1/4”. The existing recoil pads were replaced. I would think an experienced gunsmith could take an 1/8” of with a bandsaw without issue.

I have recently bought a Model 70 Classic Safari Express in .375 H&H. Damn thing is like a club. It is being restocked to my standard dimensions. I like M70s but the stocks don't cut it.

Any stockmaker/gunsmith should be able to trim that with a sanding machine and probably refit the same recoil pad depending on the stock taper.

If you guys think the Model 70 is beefy then dont try a CZ 550 !

RJ Renner did a great job on my club of a CZ 550. He is located in Sparks Nv

I have two CZ 550s. One CZ 550 I purchased from someone on here, and it was worked on by RJ Renner, and what a difference between the two.

Agree with all. And,
Lmao on the CZ comment.
I have a synthetic stock on my CZ 458 Lott. I find it a bit slimmer than the wooden one.
But, that action is pretty massive.

I don't know who designs the Model 70 since 2008 but even the grip of my 2 Featherweights feels beefy. And I don't have small hands... this guy is probaly 6.5-7 foot tall.

My 375 Safari Express feels exactly the same. way too much wood around it!

If I may ask, what was the upcharge on the CZ 550? I have an email into them but no response yet. John

@John J, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it was in the $800-900 range. They are not good at answering e-mails, I'd give them a call. I'll look and see if I have any pictures to post.

Here is a great picture of my CZ 550 before and after. My apologies to the OP for the derailing of the original post.

For a time, the extent of which I don't know, Winchester used a Monte Carlo style stock for at least some of their "Safari Express" models. I have one in 375 HH. It is sightly more slim around the fore end and wrist. It has a length of pull, measured from center of trigger to center of butt pad, of 13 3/4". It is as it left factory. I have three of the latest (at least the latest as made at New Haven before 2006) that have the straight top profile. They are slightly beefier in the fore end and wrist. They have a length of pull of 13 7/8" from center of trigger to center of pad. They are as they left the factory. The beefier stock doesn't bother me especially in the heavier calibers. A length of pull of either 13 3/4" or 13 7/8" are both ok for me, cause no issues and seem adequate enough to help prevent scope eyebrow from recoil. :)

To reduce length of pull, any decent gunsmith can shorten the butt by removing the appropriate length of wood off the butt, re-attach the pad then blend the pad back to the same profile/surface level as the butt. May require some extent of wood refinish or finish blending.

Here are pics of two of the examples I have. I have 4 of these Win 70 "Express" marked rifles. This 416 Rem Win 70 was manufactured ca 2003 and is marked "Safari Express" on the barrel and has the straight top stock profile. It, like the other two I have are late New Haven rifles (pre-2006). They are slightly beefier in the fore end and wrist than the Super Express model pictured. They have LOPs of 13 7/8". I assume most if not all the post New Haven (FN era, post 2006) rifles have similar stock geometries. The 375 HH Win 70 pictured was manufactured ca 1996 and is marked "Classic Super Express" on the barrel and "Super Express" on the floor plate. It has the Monte Carlo style stock and it is slightly slimmer in the fore end and the wrist than the "Safari Express" marked rifles I have. It has a LOP of 13 3/4". I do not know the exact year range of manufacturer of the Win 70 (Classic) Super Express marked models with the slimmer Monte Carlo style stock but the Blue Book indicates new in either 1993 or 1994 and discontinued 1998. The (Classic) Super Express I have seems to have a slightly higher level of finish to the wood and metal than the slightly later Safari Express models.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
