Hello all. I woke up this morning, did chores and took the wife to the sports show in Sioux Falls, SD. Minding my own business we came across a vendor at a booth that I met a few years back. He's a friend of a friend and has a camp in South Africa.

We talked a bit and next thing I know we have a hunt booked for March 2023.

I'll be here a bit asking some simple questions. Looking forward to it and thanks for your patience.

Planning is part of the fun. Welcome aboard. Congrats on the first, won’t be the last.

Welcome to AH! Have a look around, ask lots of questions.

You are in the right place to have virtually any hunting question answered. Good Luck.

DON'T GO !!! You will be forced to join African Hunters Anonymous when you return home. You will become quickly addicted and will want to return for another adventure as long as you are alive !!

This is a great resource website. Plenty of AHA members here with tremendous experience and advice.

Enjoy the build up to your trip.
Welcome to AH.

Welcome aboard and congrats!

Hi all. First time trip. I booked for a Kudu, Gemsbok. Zebra and Impala. Of course the shopping cart isn't full until the hunt is done. 7 day trip, 5 full days of hunting.

I'll be asking a lot of questions on what to bring (and what not to bring). We leave March 11, 2023.

I'm bringing my own rifle and factory ammunition. Leaving from Sioux Falls, South
Dakota to South Africa. Most of my questions will be about packing. Later on I'll ask about bringing trophies back. I am thinking mostly of European mounts but that could change.

I would appreciate any advice in advance on travelling with a rifle and ammunition from the United
States and back. I have a suppressor on my rifle that I really want to bring with and back again. Any experience anyone ? Thanks.

Stormy

Welcome to AH!

Welcome! You're going to have a ball!

I can't speak to the suppressor question, but I found traveling with my own rifles to be relatively easy. Of course, there are permitting services which will do your paperwork for you, but I didn't use one. A little research on this site and a couple of others, and I felt comfortable enough to do it myself, and my my rifles flew right through SAPS.

Welcome to AH! Congratulations on your safari. We are here to help, let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome & congrat’s on your 2023 Ice Breaker African Adventure …

I agree w/ @Trophyhunter01 … planning is 1/2 the fun! Traveling w/ your rifle is optimal as a Hunter & requires proper forms on both ends: US is 4457 & then Navigating the South Africa Police (SAP) Forms - the overall process is doable for a 1st timer traveler BUT you only know your International Travel Experience and/or Tolerance if something changes & goes sideways @ clearance.

I would consider consulting a Travel Agent smart on the latest weapon travel requirements & two (2) are popular on AH. Travel Express & Gracy Travels … ‘experts on the subject.’

I‘m unaware of any issues traveling w/ suppressor under proper docs & registration, as required. Widely popular in S. Africa.

Happy Trails!

Welcome to AH. Lots of great advice and information available here. You mention packing, Philip Glass has an excellent video about packing, everyone says you will take too much. Ask your PH what he or she recommends. Good luck.

Welcome. Lots of great advice to be found here. As mentioned Phillip Glass has excellent video’s on packing and travel tips. Use a travel agent for flights and gun travel advise. I use Travel Express.
Ask any questions and you will get answers from experienced travelers.

@Stormy Kromer is there a reason you selected mid-March for your hunt? Seems a bit early, but I realize some schedules are driven by work at home.
