Mauser M03 in Africa

I am Janusz, I am from Poland. I am planning my first hunting trip in Africa next year. I have a Mauser M03 caliber 30-06 and 243win. Is that enough for me? Should I order an additional 9,3x62 or 300win.mag barrel?

Hi Januez, Caliber will depend on what you plan on hunting. 30-06 is a great caliber and work fine, except for dangerous game then 9,3x62 should be considered minimum.

If not hunting dangerous game, I would take 300 win mag, for eventual longer shot. But 30 06 will serve you well, dont worry. Just take premium high quality ammunition.

M03 is phased out, no longer in production. This may be a problem to find extra barrels. But if you like that rifle, and if you find barrels, then buy the barrels (regardless of African safari), because the more time passes the barrels will be harder to find in the future.

You´ll be fine for plainsgame with your 30-06

Hello Januzs. Your 30-06 is a fine choice for all plains game. Use a good quality bullet of 180 grains or more and enjoy your safari. The 243 is too light for anything larger than a Springbok. I’m sure hunters have cleanly taken larger game with a 243, but it would not be my choice, especially since you have an ‘06.
