It's basically required reading before your first safari.

They also have a pocket version that you can carry with you in case you want to confirm where to shoot a certain species.

Welcome to AH.

The S.C.I. Record Book of Trophy Animals, Africa Edition is a good layman's resource.

Another way is to Google your desired trophies and read up on each of them.
We also have threads here on AH that detail Hunting various plains game species and some dangerous game. From the home page just enter the Shot Placement section and have at it. The threads have shot placement guides and various members experiences hunting particular animals. The threads here on AH are an excellent resource ........I have studied many of them.

The pocket edition of perfect shot gives you something to look at on the grueling flight over. Remind yourself why you’re putting up with torture[emoji56][emoji56]

Some of the outfitters have info on each animal on their website.
The perfect shot book is helpful.... or you can do as my PH told me. Remember to aim a bit lower than you do for most American game but always aim to break a shoulder. It will make tracking easier if needed. We never needed to track any game shot like that more than 80 yards and then only a couple.

Maybe I will suggest a book bit of the topic, but it may give you a bit different angle on South African hunt.

Try the book: "The new game rancher" by Pamela and Peter Oberen.
It is about modern game farming, low and high fences, sex ratios of farmed species, diseases, disease free buffaloes, predator control, etc...
Generally it covers all except for hunting, but once you step a foot on any commercial hunting farm many things will be crystal clear, whatever is that you may see.
It is very enlightening.

I bought this book on Johannesburg airport, but it is available on amazon.

On the subject of hunting, I find the books by Col. Craig Boddington very educational, second to none on this subject.

Another one: Mammals of South Africa, pocket guide, or any similar book, for quick identification of local wildlife/

Had an excellent classifieds transaction with JoninCO. A truly honest and standup member. I wouldn't hesitate at all to deal with him again. Thanks, J!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx
