Knife made out of a railroad spike

a friend makes knivies out of railroad spikes,and boy are they hard and hold a edge, a bit butt heavy. I,m going to have him take some off the handle-butt to lighten it up a bit and finish sharpening it. Leslie.

I don,t know what steel its made from, but its realy hard. I would still like to have him thin the handle down a little and also thin pommel. as is its sharp enough to shave with, but for me I like a little thinner blade. leslie.

Very cool. Did he do the twist in the handle or is that what newer railway spikes look like (I've only seen the old fashioned straight style)?

Does he do any handle work or just blades?

he puts the twist in for the handle at first heat I think, and also hammers the spike flat for the blade from the pointed end of the spike.they start out as regular railroad straight spikes.

Then fill it full of molten lead ,keep in bedside drawer as a back up to the ACP for burglars.

Leslie, my brother- in-law does a lot of old fashioned forge work. He made a similar knife for me along with some "squirrel sets" to go with my black powder "accoutrements. " These knives are crude but very effective.

If you like the lenght then maybe drill out the handle to lighten it ? Looks plenty strong enough . Take it another step further after drilling it out and tap it and screw on a cap . Or epoxy a cap . Turn it into à bit of a survival knife ?

My thinking too.
That steel should " handle " hollowing out and still be plenty strong .
