That's my WAG as having no elephant hunting experience. I see him on one of those live cameras over a waterhole in Tanzania.

And this one?

Given a normal root I’m saying 85+. Take that for what it’s worth. Which is pretty much .02$

Assuming 16” at the lip for #1, 65-70 lb.

For #2, looks like 18” at the lip, so 90-95lb would be my guesstimate. Hopefully some elephant hunters will chime in.

I can tell you with other angles on #1 his left and longer tusk really turns in and is longer than it appears in this one snapshot.
Maybe I'm not too far off.

Photos are often difficult live judging is easier...for me anyway....this would be my higher end values from what I can see....
I would have just said over 60 and over 80...

The size of the elephant, which you can't really figure out in a picture, tells a lot of the story too.

I've seen a really big elephant with modest tusks and decent girth you'd assume was a 32-35lb specimen that was 53lbs on both sides. But it was a huge bodied Hwange Corridor / Botswana bull.

A GIANT set of tusks growing out of a Zambezi Valley bull might end up being only 28lbs when you realize how small the animal's frame actually was.

What separates enthusiasts like us from actual professionals is their ability to really, really judge circumference at the lip. Every other calculation becomes a variable against that number. I can't do it whatsoever, I can only judge "nice ivory" and "not so nice ivory".

...also factoring in the length of the dental pulp cavity, which can effectively reduce the weight of the tusk. Much like House Legislation, "you have to shoot it to see what's inside." The 2nd two pics are really nice. The answer is: Shoot! You can tell your friends any weight you wish upon return home. (They'll never know!)

I will. Every time I've had someone tell me the weight of the tusks, I look around back for the KG stamp on them to much amusement. So many liars. Why can't you just be proud of the hunt and seek joy in the experience? :)

I don't think it would be a smart thing to point a lazer at an elephant, but the instruments we have in our manufacturing shop would give you the diameter fairly accurately in the field, and the circumference is just a calculation.

It is amazing to see the old B&W photos of 110 lb tusks! Those days appear to be over for (now sport) hunters. Here's a color photo from the site. Peter looks pretty happy!

Tranquilize. Dental X-Ray. Measurements. Calculations. Decisions. Antidote. (just kidding!) There are a few among us, however...

Because a lot of people want to hold records....even if it is a lie.

Human beings are interesting creatures, have seen the most faithful Christian skirt laws for their own benefits and chastise others for doing lesser. Not everyone is that way, it more about the people of today than anything else (IMHO). Think about it was not that long ago people had to wear a letter A and now we have websites dedicated to making it happen. I know this is not what we are talking about, just the lack of character that has been taking place over the years.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
